    Pretty creepy.

Why was she reduced to crawling?
You aren't what you think you are. What you think, you are.

She just ran 26 miles, led most of the way, but then blew up. Even with that crawling spell, she finished in 3:04:02.

That looks impressive to me, I know I couldn't go that far on 2 feet.

She finished 3rd. Speaks to how far out in front the first three runners were, that the 4th place woman didn't catch her while she crawled to the finish. If she hadn't finished, I wonder if she would have put a 26.18 sticker on her car.

I suspect she would have put a 'Death before 26.18' sticker on her coffin.

She might have been the second loser but she finished, by Gawd.

It also speaks that the race committee awarded her a co-second place.

This was Austin. I doubt Dallas or Houston would have.

Couldn't find any followup on this gal, but I'd be worried she might develop medical problems from doing this. Two instances I can think of (Commonwealth Games in about 1970 and Olympics in 1984) both had marathon competitors go down, then try to continue and they're now living with lifelong medical problems. Here's a video from the 1984 olympics, with all the over-dramatic flourishes (music, commentary). Couldn't find an English language version:

Extreme sports like this have been shown to cause later health problems when people are able to finish the race.

Here's a link to the 1954 Vancouver Commonwealth Games incident involving Jim Peters. No mention here of his ongoing medical issues, but I believe Runner's World magazine had an article about him in the 1970s where he described his ongoing issues. He died in 1999.
