what is American cuisine?

My history teacher had a discussion about this today, and he said to ask others this question. So here it is, what do you think is strictly american food?

Oh, and brownies. I nearly had a heart attack when someone in Australia asked me what brownies were when I commented on how much I missed them. I went to nearly every store in Perth, but no brownies. So I made them from scratch.

Isn't "American cuisine" kind of an oxymoron?

DieselDan 04-14-05 08:48 PM

Bar-B-Que. NOT stuff you put on a grill. Real, slow cooked pulled pork and ribs with the regioanlly correct sauce. NOT some hamurgers and steaks yo seared over a flame for 3 minutes. BBQ takes all day to cook properly. NOT grilling.

RegularGuy 04-14-05 10:32 PM

crawfish

But it takes so long to cook it. I want instant gratification! :D

I've been all around the world and I like much of what I've tried, and I think we have the best food in the world in America. Think Maine Lobster!

I'm not a food purist -- I like creating fusions of multi-cultural foods and inventing something that's uniquely American. Most "American" foods are probably fusions of imports from other areas, much like our ethnicity. Think of things like southwest posole, crawfish etoufee, chicken-fried steak, gumbo, and so on. Genuine German schnitzel and spaetzle is fantastic (but it can also be really bad). Down-home Japanese cooking like my grandma made can also be out-of-this-world oishi desu-ne!

For those who think American fast food is the worst this world has to offer -- you haven't encountered Canadian poutine or English boiled meat. :D

all your replies are really great, catsup is from India, fries or pommes frites with aioli are from Belgium, so what is American cuisine? pie is really good , I believe that really is an American invention. mostly though we took food from our home land and reinvented it for our new culture. we have alot more meat in the USA then what was
traditionally available in other cultures (although that's probably all changed with
globalization ) so American food is any culture with a larger emphasis on meat
