    How can i put in a bigger custom avatar?

    There is a max size limit. You can't go over it.

    If I'm not mistaken the avatar size for the paid members is somewhat larger than that of the non-payers

    It is.

    BCBike, at the top right of this page is a "Use Control Panel" link, click that, on the left hand menu of your control panel is a "edit avatar" link. Once on the edit avatar link, scroll down to custom avatar, select the radio button Use Custom Avatar, below that you have two options, enter in an avatar URL, or upload one from your computer. The max avatar size is listed under the 2nd option.
