Seems to work OK in Firefox. If I get a chance tonight I will try fiddling with IE 11 settings to see if any make a difference.

I just tried compatibility view- it wouldn't let me view the formatting icons above the text field, but the name would show when I hovered.
I was able to post a pic using the insert tool- but the OK button did not show (had to use 'enter' key).
Short story long- NEITHER Compatibility View nor Enterprise Mode are fixes.

It seems to be an issue with the "enhanced WYSIWYG" message editor interface . If I change the forum message editor interface to "standard" in general settings, it works normally.

for me, it has something to do with using the backspace key when there is whitespace above what I am typing.

The enhanced WYSIWYG theory is maybe part of it, not all vB forums using 4.2.x have this problem and vB3 (admittedly not that common anymore) doesn't suffer this problem in general.
Here is what I know from a good bit of experience.
The editing functions are semi-borked, you can get stuck for a good bit from adding images, a certain image in a multiple image window will get stuck when to try to advance and also when you close the viewer and reopen that image or the next will open in it's own page and you may get an invalid thread specified message it the click--go back to the previous page and you might be lucky.
I tend to get a churning page load and have to close and reopen now and then but that's not specific to vB forums, it happens elsewhere--anyone else?
Editing can produce the message about the needing three characters or more (OK/CANCEL) and you have to use PREVIEW and save to make the edit work...changing anything won't do anything, I can't begin to describe it all at 4 am.
Since a lot of my friends on other sites use smartphones and other browsers/computers/operating systems I think the IE users are left...it still doesn't affect everyone.
Still, the letter skipping problem is probably a Windows Update away from being fixed for 7/8/7.1 users. I tried the 10 upgrade in August and regretted it. The 'Threshold 2' upgrade is larger than the original download for 10 I'm told...that sounded like the first was a beta almost. I recommend searching answers.microsoft.com to read up on issues anyway.
But I know a Windows Update fixes the letter skip.
I'm late for bed so I'll end there for lack of brainpower...yawn

Is anybody following up, and what did you find? Others would like to know.

Thanks to @GeneO The "Standard Editor" change has "fixed" the issue. I haven't noticed what else has changed with that change- but for now I'm all cool with it:
Go to Settings
on the left, under "My Account" go to "General Settings"
Scroll towards the bottom under "Miscellaneous Options"
Under "Message Editor Interface"
Choose "Standard Editor."

Thanks to The Golden Boy for messaging me about GeneO 's "standard editor" fix!
I run IE with Windows8 and this solved my problems here completely. I expect my old Vista/IE machine will now also run smoothly, will check that tonight.
Thanks also to GeneO of course!
Now I won't feel grumpy!

I just made the switch over to the Standard Editor, too. This post was typed non-stop, without editing (by me) as a test. So far, it seems to have helped.
Iswched bak to the Ehancedeitor frthis ost update. s you can see, it still des ot work.
<switched back to Standard>
In addition, the post edit, above, could not be made ("Saved" after typing) using the Enhanced Editor.
I tried to "Copy" the text, close the post, then start a new Edit Post" but could not "Paste" the edits into the post, either.
"Cut and Paste" from a Word Document did not work, either.
To complete the update, I had to switch back to Standard Editor mode.
