Gripe about Forum video ads

(sorry but nowhere else was available to post this)

Don't know if it's related to the recent software update or what, but the video ads that are now imbedded into Forum threads are completely unacceptable. I'll have scrolled down to the middle of a thread to read it, and suddenly the page will revert back up or down to a spot where a video ad is playing. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot??? I can't stop the video ads or keep the screen from scrolling back.

I realize ads help pay for the site, so I can accept static ads. But to suddenly have to be forced to see-and hear-- a blaring video? That totally distracts from my enjoyment of an otherwise fine Forum, to the point where I may no longer frequent it. Not only are they obnoxious, but they consume bandwidth and computer resources--often I'm not on a high-bandwidth connection with unlimited data!

Yes, I understand, the site does sell premium membership that eliminates ads. However, right now I'm unemployed with no income, so premium memberships are not an option.

Bummer. I couldn't possibly view this forum without a subscription (at home anyway) we still have only medium speed DSL there
@nashvillebill, have you got a PayPal account?

Here's a callout to the rest of the forum: let's take up a collection and buy this guy a two-year subscription, a bargain at $20; I volunteer to kick in the first $4.

Unresponsive scripts are my "time management" system. When they start to occur it let's me know I've been here too long and it's time to do something else.

solving the OP problem with a membership will not solve the actual problem. intrusive ads like this will drive away newcomers that are interested in the forum: but if in the first couple visits they are bombarded with ads and can't see content easily, they will leave and not come back - and never become members. its just bad for business.

I know what you are saying and I agree with you. But most Forums I visit seem to be going this route.

It's not just forums, it's every website that has advertising on it.

When you've got a 16G Core i7 machine that can't handle the ads that are native to the website... that speaks well for no-one.

RIGHT!? When I move to my work computer and that beast starts to chug on a website I wonder, "If this rig is visibly slowing with all the ads and pop ups, how does anyone else see this?"

I agree that video ads are a royal pain, but this forum offers a premium membership which rids you of having to see these ads. And for an absolute bargain of $1 or less per month, it's definitely the way to go!

I became a paid member years ago. Your post makes me realize it has been well worth the expenditure.

Trouble viewing forums using Safari - help

I've recently started having problems while reading threads using Safari. I think maybe it's the autoplaying video ads (maybe, not sure). The page periodically jumps to the bottom--about every 20-30 seconds. It happens repeatedly. It happens when I'm composing replies. It's driving me crazy!!!

Doesn't happen when I use Chrome.

Help?

Thanks for the offer to pay for my membership, I truly appreciate the thought! However, while it would solve my problem, it would be rather selfish of me to accept, since the many other folks who aren't members would still be enduring the same difficulties. Thank you however for the kind intentions!

Incidentally, I'm running a fairly new, fairly high-powered Macbook Pro with the latest iOS (El Capitan something or other?) But I think it does it on Windows 10 on my desktop box as well.

Oh well, at least I got to vent a little. Thanks.

I started a thread to complain about this. A mod said they had never heard of it. This was just a few minutes ago. https://www.bikeforums.net/forum-sugg...fari-help.html

I have not even been able to read the full OP in this thread because the damn thing keeps skipping to the bottom of the page.
