A Feature that Would Improve Manners and Participation

And make for a better user experience....

I've noticed that there are some people on the forums who often make pests of themselves. Their posts seem designed to bug or harass people. Or they just want to argue or contradict. Or they are just chronically unpleasant or ugly to deal with. Some good members have checked out because of this, or ceased to participate. I miss them.

There is something that would help solve this. It would discourage negativity, and encourage more postings and new threads, and give some power to each individual to disallow the unpleasant behavior on their threads.

If, in addition to the 'ignore' feature (which has serious shortcomings in this area), people could also keep selected individuals off their threads (the threads that they start), it would help a lot. I would certainly feel much freer, and would enjoy the site much more, if I could keep a few of the rude, argumentative, negative posters off the threads that I start. I would very much enjoy discussing various issues with some of the people here. And most are okay. But those few who just make ugly pests of themselves drive me and others away, and I often just don't feel like posting a potentially interesting thread, or raising a topic, because I know some of these people will hijack or ruin the thread, and make it an unpleasant experience....

This would really go a long way toward solving it for me, and I believe for others as well.

We already have a feature for that. A couple, in fact.

One is the red ! button next to your online status light...

The other is closing a thread.

The third is being banned.

I would favor a feature that prevents new users from posting stupid beat-to-death threads before they try to search for an answer. Obviously that does not exist.

I am aware of these options, and can be useful at times. They have their limitations though, and there is room for improvement. I would hope that the site would be open to hearing this, and open to user requests and needs.

This suggested additional option would be a real and significant improvement for me, and I've seen a number of situations in which it would be very useful to others as well, and would be an improvement for them, and would have kept them participating here.

It would also serve as an additional deterrent to bad behavior.

And it would lighten the burden on the moderators, and free up their time, as well as my and others' time. And it would make for a significantly more enjoyable experience here, and probably keep more people on board and participating.

I think one of the moderators already spoke to you about that on the "stupid" thread you did this on.

You might just want to learn to deal with posts you don't like. No doubt some people find your posts unnecessarily bothersome and they do the smart thing which is to ignore it and move on. That's what I'm doing with this post. I find this to be a pretty unhelpful sets of suggestions.

Yes, I have used it (I'm not sure how many times), and it can be useful. I am not saying it isn't useful. I am only saying that the situation could be improved, and I think this additional option would improve it.

I can provide examples if it is meaningful to do so.

It's not something I want to waste my time on. Those few rude and unpleasant people here are not those I want to spend my time talking to or dealing with or wasting time on. I would enjoy talking with those who can have an intelligent, positive discussion. There are people who are consistently negative and rude and unable to do that, and they interfere with the good discussions, often in serious ways.

I think this added option would solve it in a number of cases.

There are people here who just can't seem to have the goodwill to have an amiable, intelligent, positive or constructive discussion.

It's okay folks, the newbies will ask these questions until the twilight of time, as all newbies have.

That's why I say take a test ride, shift the gears and see what BF does on the hills and straightaways.

There used to be a popular bumper sticker in FL, something like "We don't care HOW you did it in Ohio." Or Michigan, MN or where ever.

Then put them on 'Ignore' or if you feel that they are harassing/insulting you, report them.

So what it boils down to is having the ability to disallow people from coming into a thread and commenting. This would keep people who you feel are not seeing the same views as you out of the conversation and preventing a good healthy debate.

The members here are from all kinds of backgrounds, from all over the world. Different cultures, different experiences, different needs... excluding that vast amount of opportunities to learn and grow, to accept or change, would some limit others in their relations not only with others but with themselves.

Allowing everyone to participate can open their eyes to different points of view, a chance to widen their horizons or ways of thinking and possibly apply it to their every day living. So by virtually locking people out of a discussion, that would create a private club, which is against what we do here. There are other places that allow it.

Everyone is welcome, unless they here ONLY to troll, to hurt or to damage others. If that is the case, we are hoping that they will be reported, so the moderation team can discuss, and handle the situation fairly for everyone.

But I thank you for the suggestion.
