new name for touring forum?
Hey Joe,
Randonneuring (organized, fast paced, super-longdistance cycletouring) has grown rapidly in the USA over the last several years. How about renaming the touring forum to "Touring and Randonneuring"?

I beg to differ. I tend to consider randonneuring closer to "road cycling". I haven't seen too many randonneurs who travel with 2-4 panniers on a bike with 700x37 tires.

I think randonneurs use panniers. They are required to carry quite a bit of equipment for safety reasons, plus, I don't think they are supposed mechanically, so they have to carry tubes, and tires, etc.
But true, they may not use 700x37c tires. But I don't think all touring bikes use that tire either. A 32c or 28c tire works pretty good for touring also.
I don't see why randonneuring shouldn't be included in that forum.

I'd like to see a long distance forum to differentiate between racers and century riders and randonneurs.

I would suggest long distance as a subforum under road cycling to include centuries,randoneering and as in my case less competitive longdistance rides.I would also like to see this started but think the mindset is different enough from touring that I would prefer to see that forum stay as is.

I personally think Touring covers it pretty well. Also, if we start to split forums up, are we to have a forum for those who do centuries or more on road bikes, one for the same thing with tourers (which are road bikes anyway) and one for MTB's.

The equipment used for randonneuring is almost identical to touring, and technically, the events ARE tours. But I think randonneuring is much too small to get it's own dedicated forum, and as someone else already said, it isn't good to subdivide a forum too much, which is why I suggested (and still suggest) lumping randonneuring in with touring. If we can't change the name of the forum, how about just change the description so that "touring" includes randonneuring (and maybe centuries too)?

Personally I think there may be getting to be too many independent forums and some consolidating into subforums could be useful.Ideally long distance would make a good standalone forum but given what I just said I agree with Chris a subforum under General Discussion along with or possibly even combined with Big Rides may be the best alternative.I just don't think alot of obsessing over time or distance or proper nutrition at mile 200 with no consideration of the journey (or even where the ride is taking place)which is how other long distance forums have seemed to evolve is compatable with the touring forum here which I think is one of the best as is(and thus would hate to see diluted).
