avatar pics

So I'm wanting to use a custom avatar. Maybe I'm over complicating things here, but I'm having a heck of a time trying to resize to fit the requirements. This is what I've been doing:

Find a pic on my computer that I want to use.
Open the pic in photoshop
select the image resize option
end up making it so small to fit the 5k requirement, that I can no longer see it.

so...what in the **** am I doing wrong here? Can someone give me some feedback on how they did theirs? Thanks y'all!

It looks as if you got the problem solved? Or are you still looking for a different solution?

Does photoshop have a 'save for web' option that lets you adjust the file size?

  1. Make sure the resolution of the image you want to use is 72dpi.
  2. Once you get the 72dpi image sized to fit the BikeForums Avatar dimension limits, go to File>Save For Web.
  3. Adjust the quality settings on the right while checking the image on the left until you get the file size small enough to work, while still maintaining the quality you desire.

Although I accidentally figured it out shortly after I posted my query, the above is the info I was after. Thank you!

Process it in Photoshop down to a 256 color palette. That's 8 bits per pixel instead of 24 bits in full color, so the file size shrinks down a lot.
