Private Forums???

Hey Joe, as a bike shop employee, there are some things I'd like ask some other BSE's, w/o the general knowledge of the General Forums. I know I can add the one's I know of to my "Buddy List", but is there a way to add a "Buddy Group"?

Or, is there a way you could only grant access to a LBS Employee Only Forum to a few priveledged few? Kinda like the Welcome Team.

Just curious.

Done, you should have access to the forum now, it's located below the lounge. I'll make an official announcement for the forum after work.

Hey I don't work anywhere - I'm unemployed. But I visit the bike shops in the area all the time. Does that qualify me? Can I join the "secret club"? <j/k>

I haven't been in a "secret club" since I was a kid.

Hi karlovrhy

You may want to put this as it's own post in the General Discussion forum. You'll probably get a better response.

I don't know about everyone else, but my bike shop here in Chicago allows us to return the bike within a month of purchase. If you suspect something is wrong with your bike, take it back to where you got it immediately. Either they can identify the problem and fix it, or they can exchange it for a new bike.

Koffee

P.S. Welcome to the Forums!

Thats why it is best to buy from a real bike shop
then you get in on the warranty...I've seen people
take there bicycles back to dept. stores looking
for results, they never get cause those people don't
know nothing about bicycle maintanance...fact of
life bicycles need maintenance and they never see much
of that at dept. stores

People come to bikeforums.net for exactly that kind of generally inaccessible information, not to be stonewalled at yet another turn just like they are at their LBS.

Well sorry but you are not going to get that info from me. I am not going to tell you what I pay for product. Why do you and your other cohort think I should?
Does Nike tell everyone that they only pay on average of $5 per shoe they make? Does Crest tell everyone that they only pay $.05 for tubes of toothpaste? What would be the point?

I never said that you should necessarily divulge any information that you don't want to. Keep it all under your hat if you wish, and continue to try to hose the general cycling public for as much as you possibly can. The best cycle shops are not the ones that follow the philosophy that keeping the customer in the dark as much as possible is the best way to deal with them. Only an LBS who does not offer quality service/value need fear the informed customer. If he/she can get better value elsewhere then you don't deserve their business anyway. The feeling that I get from you (in our extremely limited exchange) is that you try to 'get away' with as much as you can by divulging as little as possible, and that mentality bothers me.

My point is that, as I understand it, this board is for bike enthusiasts, and a significant part of being a bike enthusiast is trying to get the most for your biking dollar (esp. since alot of us are students who don't have tonnes of money to sink into our bikes). Setting up a private forum where you and any like-minded people can find splendid new ways to rip the customer off even more does not seem to be consistent with the goal of serving the cycling community.

What? What gave you the idea that I was "hosing the general public." If I elect not to disclose what I pay for something how is that ripping you off? Especially since you are in Canada and I am in Tx.? Besides what makes you think I do not give service that is acceptable? Have you ever been in my shop? Also how do you know my prices? How is it that if we want to discuss inside info that you feel it is some conspiracy to rip you off?
Go into Dell and try your rant and see where it gets you.

True, I don't know anything about your bike shop. You could have the greatest LBS to grace the shores of the great state of Texas, or you could be the most crooked bastard to ever take up the wheel. I have no idea. What I do know is that your first response when a member asked why you could want a private forum for shop employees is that you don't want the regular Joe cyclist to know what you pay wholesale. This tells me that it's important to you that you keep this information from your customers, presumably so you can get away with charging them as much as you can (I can't see why else). My argument was that if you do offer the best value/service then you have no reason to hide this information; customers will come to you because you're the best. And, as I said before, if you're not then you don't deserve their money.

And you're probably right about one thing. If I strolled into Dell and started demanding to know what they pay for product, they'd laugh me out of the building. However, if I ran a bulletin board for computer enthusiasts, and Michael Dell came along and told me to make a private forum so he and Mr. Compaq, Mr. Hewlett-Packard, and the rest of his buddies could talk behind the backs of the rest of the membership, I'd tell him to sod off.

OK, have I got this right ? LBS owners & their employees have their own secret forum that the ordinary cyclist & enthusist members of this forum can't read or post on ? Am I right so far ? That would indicate that commercely sensitive info. is being exchanged , which in turn would assist the LBS's profit margins . Thats fine but this is not a commercial site . I would suggest that if this secret forum for LBS owners is to continue they should be charged a set subsription fee for the service !!

The other point raised was that they dont want the common or garden cyclist asking "silly" questions there , this could be overcome buy letting the "great unwashed" namely the backbone of these forums view these secret post's but not post, in much the same way as a guest to OUR forums may do with pleasure
sorry to be a pain in the arse

Greywolf,
On your first point question, NO! That was my answer, it was a example of a possible reason. However this forum is owned by Joe, if he decides to open a forum like he did with this purpose intended he by all means can. After all it was created by members requesting it.
I do not believe any question is "silly." If you do not know you do not know. I have not accused someone here of asking "silly" mechanical questions.

Now McGuillicuddy,
I think you are getting to riled up over nothing. I merely stated a example. If you think for one second I own a shop to get rich or "rip people off" then you must be nuts.

What is the problem? Many forums on the net have areas where only a select group are allowed to access. As long as it doesn't change the content on the rest of the site I am all for it. It's about building a community and keeping everyone here. These guys could probably go elsewhere on the internet to discuss their issues in private, but we would not have the benefit of their input as often on our site.

Actually, I asked for it for advice from an insiders point of view, not from the "general masses". Advice on repairs, how to handle difficult customers and in some cases good or bad suppliers, wholesalers...etc.

There are some topics that would stir up the hornets nest unecessarily!
