Or donate $25 to the forums and you won't see any ads at all!

This is all done in an effort to make bikeforums a better place and hopefully it won't detract too much from the good content here.

I don't mind the flashy advertisements to the right or the inserted ads for sponsors between posts, but cramming unavoidable in-your-face Google ads into the posts IS very annoying. Unfortunately, the dotnet is beginning to look more like a dotcom. *sigh* Twenty one ads per page.

That wasn't meant to be a threat operator. Didn't intend it to come across that way. Just that other forums I have been a member of have ads that are more intrsive.

Do you have examples of where ads are MORE intrusive? I can't imagine how they could be much worse, unless you have flashing and blinking ads in the body of the post.

Here ya go: Bicycling magazine forums
My two favorite things in life are libraries and bicycles. They both move people forward without wasting anything.

Somewhere, someone must have done studies to determine the most effective number/placement of ads on forums. I'd be curious to know at what point they become so annoying they lose effectiveness for most people.

Speaking strictly for myself, this last change was too much for me, and I am not once again using an ad blocker.

Good point--they don't have much effectiveness with me, as I don't click on the ads. And I actively dislike flashing ads. I would not join a forum where there are blinking/flashing ads, as those ads are simply unbearably painful to watch.

I find even animated ads cause eye-strain after a few minutes - my eyes keep darting from the text I am reading to the ad and back. I'm the worst person to ask about effective advertising, though, since I ignore ads. A few years ago - when telemarketing reached a peak on our house line, my cell phone, and my business line, I decided that I would take back control over my time. I don't even watch live TV anymore, our media PC records everything and I watch shows skipping the ads.

Block the google script (http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js) and block the bikefroums.net/ads directory.

    Simple.

In Firefox, you can stop the animation of images. Works for ads, avatars and all other annoying animations.

    1) type about:config in the address bar, press enter
    2) scroll down to image.animation_mode
    3) double-click on it
    4) change the value to once
    5) click OK

Popups I don't have many of as I'm using XP and the firewall helps me there. What I don't see is how the right side ads are any better, as I use Google groups and the Non-English character boxes are mostly adult sites with mostly gay porn and other dumb spam. The current version of Google groups was rushed from beta almost DOA and it's really tiring to be a volunter peer troubleshooter for the kids and old alike who have no clue about this huge data network thing they want to check average flush volume with from Columbo, Sri Lanka WITH VIDEO and commentary on low flow toilets from the BBC. Oh yes, with a poll and uploaded opinions from friends! They need to do more than expect everything to be done. I started using computers in 1979 and I wish I had stuck with budgets and cards sometimes. Creativity splits on the internet so much sometimes.

    Also www.bikeforums.net/ads/

I've long resisted blocking the ads, but they just got too dmn annoying. (And now I can select a smilie without hitting an ad instead. )
