The Forum Software Here...

Leaves much to be desired, to put it nicely, IMO. I mean, how come if someone posts a large picture all of a sudden the whole thread is now a use right arrow to follow thread?

And how many time have you gotten to the end of a thread and it shows that there is another page and when you click on the last page, there is no there there?

And how about PCad and botto? OK, maybe that is taking it too far Is there not better software out there? Just saying.

It is a free software. Take it or leave it. Beside it is just a forum. I've never noticed any real inconvenience aside of it being slow every so often.

Too many forums use this software package and there really hasn't been enough development, or if there has been, too few forums have updated to the latest releases. At least they got rid of that god awful 30 second search wait (which even triggered on failed searches, to top it off).

I actually think this forum is fine compared to some others that have participated in.
easy to post mssgs, read threads, add images hosted here, embed images that are hosted elsewhere.
Overall pretty good usability.

I haven't experienced either of the problems you site.

Isn't there a six-month probation period before new users can start complaining?

Let's make it nine.

I would like it if the forum blocked really large images, or just kept all the text visible on screen. They did do an upgrade a while back which fixed some things, but that annoying attachment viewer showed up in decompensation for it.

Definitely agree on the two points you mentioned. Showing pages that don't exist is annoying, and not auto-downsizing ridiculously huge pictures is annoying too. The auto-resize seems like it would be an easy fix. The imaginary pages, on the other hand, is a database issue that could be more difficult to track down.

Rather than blame the software, blame the people who don't know how to resize their images to something usable. I accidentally posted a huge image once. I think it was 2600 pixels wide. Oops! So I immediately shrunk it down in PS and re-uploaded it to my server. Disaster and annoyance avoided.

To be fair to those who might still be using a 15" monitor, I try to keep my images at 600 pixels wide. Can we start beating those who don't?

We are very sorry that you don't like the software, but I suspect that it will remain vBulletin for a long time.

What don't you like about PCad and botto? Personally, I find both of them to be interesting and informative.

IMO the forums work fairly well. It isn't perfect but what is. Given the size of this community (very large) I think vbulletin does an admirable job. THere are other forums which are more feature rich, but would not be appropriate for such a large forum.

Every feature requires a certain amount of server power, time/resources to implement as well as time/resources to support and maintain.

It would be very costly to try and convert these forums to a completely different engine. And a good chance that historical data could get hosed in the process.

And the bottom line, is that all of these things cost money. A forum this size I am sure if expensive to run. I don't know their finances, but their revenue comes from ads and members.

Given your lack of any stars next to your name, I would suspect you are getting what you pay for.

MitchellH, barring autosizing, which is probably in the script anyway, you can use a scrolling mouse and click and hold the wheel while dragging. 360 degree drag travel is not hard to accomplish as such.

Them thingies are righteous.

It's actually very good software. This particular implementation of it isn't very good. There's tons of cools stuff that can be done with vBulletin. There's a plug-in for it that automatically resizes images to a pre-determined size, with the option to expand to normal size by the reader. I've mentioned it in this subforum multiple times, and either nothing has been done, or they don't care.
