A man who keeps his promises!

FWIW, as a relative newcomer have thoroughly enjoyed some zombie threads. Some, well, not so much.

See you next year.

The answer is 14 years, because the whitewalls were dingy and treads geting old. Still good for spares however.

The main way threads get ressurrected on other sites I'm on is usually for spamming.

You are lucky.

Granted, waking up old ones is sometimes a way of screwing around, but if people respond to an old thread, it indicates that the issue hasn't really changed (i.e. the thread is still relevant) or possibly that there is more to add to it.

For example, in the first 6 hours after it was resurrected, the tire replacing thread at When do you replace your tires?? generated more more than triple the number of serious replies than the original thread did. Obviously, the issue is interesting to a number of members.

In any case, what's the harm in waking these things up? It's not like it happens very often, causes problems, or that all the new threads are so relevant anyway. Perhaps the instructions for the site should indicate that people should ignore threads they find uninteresting.

Back up for another year...then back to sleep again. Almost like a cicada, only at 1 year intervals rather than 17

It's the annual newbies to the internet and forums time of year. New College kids, out on the net with a lot of free time, exploring, among others.

I keep suggesting that zombie threads turn a deeper shade of green the older they get, but nobody listens to me.

+ 1. I think I need to start a thread on why cyclists don't wave.

So I missed that this is a zombie thread. I know that's why they sometimes get resurrected.

I was going to post something useful on this thread, but it is already useless anyway..... Matter of fact, it was useless when it was started.

I believe the answer will still be NO.

AS ALWAYS.

There have been a couple threads here and there that benefitted, and new posting usually stops in short order if it's pointed out and generally recognized that it's not relevant anymore.

ON THE OTHER HAND, you would shut down my thread Tempest, The Grey Bike Grows Up, which I have worked on for over 6+ years, as well as several long-running Foo threads, A&S....think about it. Your criteria are too narrow and lumping 'dead' threads in with others would be, well, silly.

Others might say your shifting isn't indexed, I have to note. You have too many things gumming your cassette to travel well. Step back and hose the bike down, adjust your derailleur and oil your chain.

Your MUP will be clear and afford a swift journey.

I like that! Someone proposed that "[ZOMBIE THREAD]" be tacked onto thread titles that were resurrected after a certain period of inactivity so that people would know.

(I don't normally do this, BTW. )

The deeper shade of green idea is genius, if I do have to say so myself. I belong to a forum that deletes a thread if it hasn't been active in a year. I don't really like it. The function of old threads here is that the archives drive a lot of traffic.

We exist as a vital repository for the entire cycling community and beyond. If the topic was covering a personal question and not directly pertinent to another member, you might ask for it to be closed but that isn't usually a useful mode d'emploi or necessary here.

People are going to have the same questions again and again and given both the historically messed up nature of vBulletin's search functions AND the fact that people are more anxious to dive in than read ahead (terms of site usage anyone?) it seems to have become routine to just deal with it, politely, in a PM or offsite if need be.

No big deal. That's what we have staff for. Contact them when you have questions, we have great staff (as if The CABE or X or Y dot com don't...that's why you start or run a website I'd hope).

Zombie thread resurrection! Khatfull must have been caught by actual zombies, since he is no longer providing the required thread reanimation.
