VBulletin 4.0 Styles Available at vbulletin.org

You could alleviate some of the problems people are having with the default vBulletin 4.0 style by installing some additional styles, available at http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=247

Almost all of them look better than the default. If you're unwilling to let users choose their own style, maybe using the images from the vBulletin 3 style for thread icons would be a good first step to making the forums more readable. I'm working on a greasemonkey script to do this myself.

I wasn't able to use Greasemonkey or the basic "My Image Here" firefox addon to replace the thread status icon images, because vBulletin 4 uses some AJAX voodoo to display thread status images. There's probably a way to make it work with greasemonkey, but I don't know enough javascript to get it working. Hopefully BikeForums will go ahead and change the icons themselves, or someone with more javascript experience can make a greasemonkey script to do it.

The problem with these styles is that they are for a specific beta release. They just launched another beta update last night, and another one is coming. Since each of these betas have pretty drastic changes in them, these styles break. Maintaining them with each beta upgrade is very taxing. This is one reason why we kept this style so close to the default. This way, we can upgrade through all the beta releases with minimal preparation and downtime. We're hoping that we can push code fixes with 10 minute downtimes.

Thanks for the response IB-Dick. I look forward to whatever UI improvements can be implemented when the release cycle calms down a bit.

I'm rooting for a new images/statusicon theme in particular, based upon the old style.

Alternative skins and alternative Image Verification images are a must-have. Period. Mark my words, BF will suffer long-term if the usability and accessibility issues are not addressed.

If guns are outlawed, only the government will have guns. Only the police, the secret police, the military, the hired servants of our rulers. Only the government -- and a few outlaws. I intend to be among the outlaws" - Edward Abbey
