I was wondering how many people on the forums are in Admin. I only see a few at a time so i couldn't get an exact number, but i am curios to know.

I'm the only admin, we have a half dozen or so moderators.

Hi Joe. First of all, thanks for setting this forum up. I subscribed as I appreciate what you do and feel like there's nothing wrong with a little compensation.

That being said, I would like to see a little more strict enforcement with respect to people being respectful of each other. I think that every topic group should have a locked message at the top that states clearly that if you are not respectful, you will be banned. This is pretty simple. I have moderated IRC chats for a long time and it's posted right at the top of the login screen - "If you are rude or disrespectful, you will be banned". After the message is sent across that people WILL be banned, everyone starts getting very nice to each other. It works. I used to try and be nice and warn people once or twice before I banned them, but, as they say, you can't change the spots on a leopard. I realize that this is never going to work in a "Politics & Religion" group, but there is no reason it can't work in the others.

My case in point is on the Bicycle Mechanics group. Yes, everyone has a right to their opinion - but - not when it includes being rude or disrespectful. There are polite ways of disagreeing. In this group, there is one person who goes out of his way to be rude to people. It's unfortunate, as he occasionally has some very useful things to say. It's not that hard to be nice.

I am guessing that you don't have many problems with paying subscribers? So, what I am asking of you is to send a message to the moderators to start getting rid of some of the problem posters. Some of the personal attacks are appalling. Please help.

Thanks.

Hi Cascade.

I appreciate your feedback. I think we will start spending some extra time in the Bike Mechanics forum just to ensure that there aren't personal attacks being lodged. What you can do for us is report any bad behavior you think is inappropriate. The report button is jus tto the left of the reply button on the bottom right side of every post. Let us know when things happen with a thread and we can act quickly.

Thanks,

Koffee Brown

I swear that people are often seeing how far they can push, just to see if they can get away with it, or not. Since I posted last, the Mechanics forum has cleaned up considerably. I have to believe that there is more than a little overlap between this thread and the "Code of Ethics" thread. In the original posting in that thread (from Dave Moulton), he relates that he got email from a couple of people suggesting he just ignore the person. I was one of the people that contacted him "off-forum" to let him know that 1. he's a good guy with a lot of great things to offer the forum, and 2. not to let some idiots get to him. Dave impresses me as a gentlemen and certainly did not deserve the treatment he got on the Mechanics forum (the thread where he came under attack was disgraceful). It's too bad when you have to embarrass people to get them to behave. It's like dealing with spoiled children. I am loathe to make comments personal - to get people know they are misbehaving - and that is why I contacted Dave off-line rather than fan a flame war. It's certainly best if we all police ourselves and not have to be told to be polite.

All that being said, it appears to me that some of these offenders have either been "spoken to", or have decided that the majority is just not going to put up with disrespectful behaviour. I am very happy to see calm prevail and a modicum of respect return to the forum. Thanks to all who support a useful and friendly discourse. Thanks, Koffee, for your interest ;-)

Honestly, the Bike Mechanics forum should be the last place we get problems and complaints! It's the one place where you can go and ask a question and not get reamed... or so, it used to be. Hopefully, it's back to normal now.

Again, if anyone has problems with a specific post, just hit the report button, write up a summation of the problem, and we'll take it from there.

Thanks,

Koffee B.
