Because spammers were using sig link images, exploiting a loophole. We had to close that loophole. It's the same reason we had to restrict access on the coupons forum and the Advertise your Services forum has been taken down. Why should they buy the cow if they're getting the milk for free? Sorry, but the actions of a few rogue members spoil it for the rest. They were using tagged GIF images with embedded links as free members, not even paying for the upgrade to Ti as a courtesy to advertise for their companies, among other tactics.

Yeah, it sucks, I agree, but it's a necessary suck, because it's bloody expensive to maintain the infrastructure and operate these forums, and we gotta pay the bills. Losing revenue to the theft of spammers isn't a business model anyone wants.......other than the spammers, and they don't care if the forums exist down the road, they just want to mine it for what they can at any given moment, until the gravy train ends. They are parasites.

frantik, technically, under the new rules of operation, your fork link is a no go, although I am going to grandfather it for you.

Sig links to the market and FS items and commercial websites that you own, or blogs that are carrying advertisements on them (This makes it a commercial site, since the ads generate revenue), or links like Hammer Nutrition where they pay you with merchandise for your sig link, are now limited only to upgraded memberships.

thanks for the info.. i was wondering if putting for sale/trade in my sig was against the rules actually. the month trial of the paid membership is pretty reasonable, i may give it a try

Is linking to something like TickerFactory considered a "commerical site"?

No, that's fine. It's just tracking and displaying your personal progress toward a goal weight. We don't have an issue with that at all. In fact, we'll encourage any positive motivator like that. A Commercial Site woulf be an electronic storefront, or such. Essentially, of you're advertising, it's commercial.

What about this signature

http://veloviewer.com/SigImage.php?a...lfghij&z=a.gif

If I try to put it in the signature field as is, forum web site complains that it's too long (more than 50 characters). If I try to make it a short URL through goo.gl, it's not displayed.

feel free to upgrade your membership. Again, we had to place severe limits on sigs for the free memberships due to spammers exploiting the system as it was.

My sig was just a formatted humorous phrase plus my username, two lines total. It (and many others) had gone away inexplicably. At least I found this explanation.

No disrespect intended, but that's an ironic thing to say given that your Location is "On a sailboat off the coast of Florida...living the good life." I'm living the working life in the snow belt, without enough snow to go x-c skiing, rather cold temperatures and too short days to do much good cycling, and wishing I didn't have to go to work. I'll be glad to upgrade my membership just to gain the sig back.

But are you 100% positive that upgrading will make the 50-char limit go away?

I'd been planning to join, paid account, for a bit now and this just accelerated the choice, but, the links in my signature were/are for charity, the American Diabetes Association--donations for my ride in the Tour de Cure: Hampton Roads on April 20, 2013. I find it odd that that link was disabled, but I guess it falls under the umbrella of being on a free account.

I just made a payment via PayPal and haven't seen a change in permissions yet--maybe this is not instantaneous. BTW, PayPal is using the immediate payment method.

Edit: I just checked and Premium Membership is showing in Paid Subscriptions in Settings.

Aw man, I just had a link in my sig to my bike's "build" thread of sorts, and now it does this. Glad I removed my ticker factory thingy already before this happened.

Couldn't the mods policing the forums just remove users' signatures that contained advertising links? As I recall that's how we were doing it when I was a mod on Honda-Tech, another IB site.

Because we'd simply be overwhelmed.

No, you can't. Sorry, it's because with Tagged images, you can slip a link into the image itself.

Was there a problem with the Rollfast skates ad image in my signature? I don't recall a link andit just said, "Smile at miles with a Rollfast!"

I'm nearly finished with the bike proper, all that remains is the fairing and electricals.

I'm also almost out of meat and cat food so I'm pretty much broke for a few days.

Well, crud. What if I just had uploaded it from my computer? How would you remove the code? My HTML editor is only Notepad as I'm not that geeky with my computer.

I believe I do have it saved to my hard drive...if that is OK my tag line is under the limits it looks like.... I will at least restore the tag line but it was such a stylish sig as it was.

How about making signatures delayed and sent to admins for approval?

It would also get people on their toes to plan ahead if they are allowed to announce something.
