What is the maximum image size?

I've tried searching but haven't found the answer: what is the maximum size for (inline) image attachments? Whenever I try to insert an inline image and have it referenced locally (in case of remote server outage, etc.) I get an error that the file is too big.

The maximum size is 100KB for an attachment. To see the different types of attachments allowed, click Go Advanced, then scroll down to Manage Attachments and click the box. A popup window comes up. Click the blue question mark in a circle at the top right of the box to see the list of allowed attachment types and their file sizes.
