Dear Bike Forums

So, I have noticed two things of late. One is that you site loads really, really slowly. So much so that I often click on a different tab waiting for it to load and forget about BF. The second thing that I noticed was that the advertising is quite aggressive. I wanted to reply to a post and the entire left side of the box was covered by a pop up urging me to travel to Ireland. By bike? I couldn't close it or make it go away so I just wandered off and didn't post. These are two examples of why I am frequenting the site less often that I would like. If the slowness and irritation continues I'll probably check in less and less until the point that there are zero add-views or page clicks from me.

Thank you for your attention.

when there is an ad like that, can you take a screen shot and post it in THIS THREAD?

The ads go away if you pay for membership

I love this site and if it takes ads to make it possible then I'm Ok with that. I just wish you guys would do away with that ad at the top of the thread page. It cuts a YouTube video in half and that's a little annoying, but it's making me think about paying the charge to get rid of ads, so I guess it's doing what it's supposed to...but aren't we a community with a common interest? I don't like feeling like I'm forced into that decision.

I understand that they are necessary and don't object to them, only that the coding of the page lets them hover over content with NO WAY of moving or closing them.

Oh, they hover? That sucks. Do you have AdBlock (or some equivalent) for your browser? I don't know if it'd stop that, but it does kill a lot of ads.

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

We don't run hover or contenty blocking ads. Occasionally ine slips through the adservers, because we don't always have preapproval before they appear, but once we find them, we can block them. Check your system as well, for malware or browser hijack. Get is a screenshot of the ad as well, and the URL it leads to, so I can refer ot to ad traffic if it's out of one of the adserver services we use.

In total honesty, a paid membership will ensure that BF doesn't serve up any ads. However, if you have malware on your system, you are still going to see ads. I know this from experience- it turned out that a 'coupon helper' had installed itself to the browser (most likely piggy-backed with another extension that I did install).

As the slow page loads, it could be that our site is seeing some heavy traffic. Or maybe your ISP has throttled your speed. Or maybe you have a bunch of services running in the background that is choking your bandwidth- weather, email, software updaters, other services that like to 'call home' automatically.

If it makes you feel better, BF is a bit on the slow side for me as well. Then again, I'm using a wireless connection in my home and the router typically is supporting 4 active devices (we have 3 laptops, 4 tablets, a smart TV, a smart Blu-Ray player, a Nintendo 3 DS and a Nook). I also know that my ISP has heavier traffic in the evening and speeds back up in the wee hours of the morning (which is when they like to take the system down for maintenance- which sucks for me and my wife).
