No experience, but we have similar bizarro world policies at work as well. I can access bikeforums, and facebook, but not any email sites. Can access youtube to. And we could access google docs, so it's not a worry about someone uploading confidential information. Just no email.

I can understand USB. It's always been a huge virus vector as well as an industrial espionage vector, and if you want to see something really scary, look up the badusb exploits that have come to light in the last few weeks.

Not surprising your gov't job site blocks this subversive forum, especially the A7S and commuting threads. They don't want you getting ideas, and coming in to demand parking, showers, a mileage not driven bonus, or anything like that.

Seriously, many companies these days block all non-work sites except for what they choose to allow. Some provide non blocked computers in common rooms you can use at lunch or off hours. The reasons vary, from security, to network security (malware/spyware, to simply anti-daydreaming on paid time.

I'd wait a bit before binging this up at a new job, but if you feel secure you can see if they'll add BF to the approved list.

I always use my phone (on LTE, not wifi) for personal stuff at work. No trace, no company spying.

I've found that a lot of places that do have some sort of filtering up will end up having it disabled for the social media sites that their marketing people use. A lot of times though, it doesn't make much sense. They're running some sort of generic template that filters out things that could potentially be pornographic, weapon related, etc. Yep. My employer has a filter that blocks out what it deems to be weapon related websites, despite the fact that part of our company's name is exactly the same as a firearms manufacturer. Google doesn't always work that well for us there as a result.

You'll be logging in from your bicycle (where you'll live I guess) if you lose your job...we love bikes but we love paying rent and we will wait for you.
