Where do I go to insert my profile picture? I have looked over the edit profile page w/o luck.

Hi bmwjoe, and welcome to the community! Click "settings" in the upper right-hand corner, then you will see the "My Settings" area in a column on the left side of the page.

Further - I can not get an avatar to show on my posts. Clicking on my name, on a post I made, will take you to my profile, and there is the avatar... What is the missing link?

Thank you, but I've done that.
I've attempted to load directly from the file on my computer, which seemingly results in nothing happening, and from Photobucket, which results in, IIRC, illegal file, or some similar error.

A bit confusing, but the picture below your name on your profile page is your 'profile picture', which is different from the avatar seen by your name in posts.
Go to Settings (upper right of the page)->My Settings (third heading on left panel)->Edit Avatar (third option, just below Edit Profile Picture).
