  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: Hints and tricks thread (hopefully)

I thought it would be a good thing to have a thread where people post and discuss little tricks they came up, during the course of their cycling and bike-repair experience. One trick I have: I noticed that, no matter how good the rubber insulation on the battery lid of the cyclecomputer, in the...

  3. Sticky Thread Sticky: sheldonbrown.com shortcuts

My Website has been growing since December 1995, and has become quite large. As a result, it is sometimes challenging to navigate it. Generally the best place to start is http://sheldonbrown.com/glossary or http://sheldonbrown.com/articles But I have also created a number of shortcut links. ...

  1. Overhauling Rear Hub

This is my bike. My rear hub is making a bit of noise and doesn't feel very smooth, so I think it's a good idea to overhaul it. Just to confirm that this is what I need: Freewheel remover (This will work right? My freewheel is a Shimano MF-TZ06) (Also is this better or worse than using a...

  2. Pitted hub cone... again.

After 7000 or so miles on the original equipment, the non drive side hub cone on my rear hub was pitted. It was pretty severe, so I pulled everything apart and checked the race (?) inside the hub and it was not damaged, just the cone. I replaced it with a Wheels Mfg. cone, replaced the...

  4. Chain length for a single speed (46/19)

Hi, all - I've been rebuilding and repairing a garbage-picked Huffy English 3-speed. Project bike. The rear hub is a Shimano, not the classic SA. It's been baptism by fire - learning how to do it as I go. Right now, I'm working on the chain. My problem is trying to figure out the length...

  6. Alternate solution for lack of reach adjuster screw on brake lever

I have a set of Shimano 600 brake levers I am giving to a friend. Her hands are quite small and unfortunately there is no reach adjuster screw on these levers. I seem to remember some...wedges that can be used to hold the lever in a slightly closed position. For the life of me I cannot seem to...

I recently installed a SRAM Omnium crankset using the stock bottom bracket. Everything seems to be fine visually. I made sure to torque it to the correct settings using a torque wrench. I greased all of the threads as instructed by the manual however I neglected to grease the bearings themselves...

  9. Poll: Interest in a bike repair wiki?

Would there be interest in a bike repair wiki? Some website where the whole community contributes to create excellent articles for everything from simple bicycle maintenance to the more complex stuff? I thought about creating one a while back, but don't want to create just another bike repair...

Hi All, There are lots of threads on this topic and I've read quite a few of them. But would like to pose a few more specific questions. First of all, I have a 2008 Specialized Allez triple. It originally came with Sora Front (triple) and Tiagra 9sp rear. It has the Sora shifters and Tektro...

I'm planning to replace the cassette on my Cannondale H300 hybrid. The current one is 11-28 and that is what I'm used to. If I replaced it with a 12-32 cassette would I notice a big difference? Also, I'm looking at the Shimano HG-70 (11-28) and the SRAM PG-730 (12-32) cassettes. Is one better...

  14. Bike Chain disposal

I know there is a company which takes bike chains once you fill up a box full of them, and they recycle them or make jewelery or something. They pay for shipping if you have a full box. I figured the mechanics would know the company i was talking about.

  15. Why do shops buy crappy Park torque wrenches?

Okay, I've just got to ask this one. Why do so many shops have absolutely crappy Park torque wrenches, both the cheap beam type and the micrometer 'click' type? 17. Freehub compatibility question

Hi guys - anyone know if a freehub that fits a 10-speed 105 cassette will also fit a 10-speed SRAM Rival cassette? AFAIK, they are fully compatible, but someone told me there is a difference between a 10speed-only Shimano hub and a 9-10 speed compatible Shimano hub, and only the latter is...

I posted this problem earlier today, but somehow it disappeared. Does anyone have a problem with their silca not letting go of a presta valve after you've inflated a tire? I've actually pulled stems off because it's on there so tight. Any help would be appreciated.

One of my Shimano PD-6610 Ultegra SPD-SL Pedals sticks and does not spin well. I checked the tech doc link below - and it says take it to a mechanic for help with moving part issues!
