Forum: Road Cycling

“It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” Ernest Hemingway.

Harder to read, harder to use, less information on a page, way too many graphic gimmicks that don't contribute anything. Why do we need all those format choices for a board like this? This post will be disappearing in five, four, three, two...

Welcome to the Road Cycling Forum! This is a thread to ask all those questions that you're not sure are too simple or too complicated (trouble changing tires, what certain terminology means, etc...). In here there are no stupid questions though being really clear and posting pictures will get...

  1. Bottles that can dispense Gu?

I wasn't sure where else to post this, I figured you guys would know. I'm looking for a bottle that has the capability to squeeze out something thicker than regular water-based liquid, and I thought I remember reading about bottles that work with Gu, or something similar. Does that exist? Would...

  3. harriman state park

I did a search and didn't find anything. Sorry if this has been discussed before. I'm going to ride from NYC and cross the Bear Mountain Bridge. Is there a good way to go from Nyack to Harriman and on to the bridge? I'm just looking for something different than the usual straight up 9W route.

I'm planning on learning to race and I'm going to be building some (700c) wheels for it over the winter. I'd like any suggestions on a pair of good 28H rims. I am not anticipating winning any races, but I want to keep up in group rides. Right now, I am leaning toward the Assault by Sun/Ringle at...

  6. Inexpensive Base Layer

I have been looking for an inexpensive base layer top. Being 5'9" and 130 pounds I have been having difficulty finding one around 25 dollars since I am unemployed. It doesnt help that a small isnt a small in mens. What do you thin cyclists do?

Did some light searching on the boards, but didn't come up with anything great. I need a light and I want it to be bright, but not $400. Can someone recommend a bar mount light that I can pick up for $100 and under? Thanks for any info in advance.

  8. Molteni Wool-I must have it!

http://www.velogear.com/prodinfo.asp?number=A+MWJ http://www.velogear.com/images/a_mwj.jpg **Drool** I must have it! It's Molteni, it's Merckx, it's wool/justification. I will feel a little conspicuous with the rainbow stripes, but I'm sure the style and comfort will offset that.

  10. 2010 Scott CR1 - looks sweet!!

Hey guys haven't seen anything posted on the newly "redesigned" CR1 so thought I'd start one. I've been looking to upgrade from a Spec Allez and was getting ready to pull the trigger on a new 2010 Spec Roubaix but a friend suggested I take a look at the new CR1 before I decided. Glad I did. 11. Fatty fat fat fat - post your before & after pics!

So my new years resolution was to be "fit by 40" , which was Oct 11th. Well i did that. I was 97.8kg at the start of the year and now i'm 75.6kg which is 22.2kg. Lots of riding (read lots!) and lots of calorie control was my method. No shakes or pills or what have you and definately no gyms! ...

  12. ADVICE NEEDED re handle bar height

Correct me if I'm wrong but there seems to be a "proper" height for a saddle (based upon one's inseams and level of comfort at a certain height) but no such thing for the handle bar. It seems as though the handle bar height is a matter of personal preference. However, looking at all the bikes...

Just got a new (used) 305 on eBay, great shape, cadence and HR, shipped for $135. And it arrived to my door almost 48 ours to the minute after I won the auction. Amazing. Anyway, any of you Garmin owners want to share some of your best tips? Anything at all...I'm finding the manual lacking...

  15. Crack Monkey Velo

I am planning on an 80 mile ride tomorrow. While you can make a case for an 80 mile late November ride being suitable for accumulating 'base miles', that is not why I am doing that ride. In my particular case they are clearly Freebase Miles. Discuss. This meeting sucks. We need a new...

  16. coming upon small groups that match your pace, how to handle?

I seldom ride with groups. More often I come upon groups during my regular Sunday ride. I have this route wired, 40 mile loop, lots of group rides are seen/encountered during the morning. When I come upon a small group (between 5 and 10 riders), I find that the pace is almost always acceptable...

  19. Clothing strategy for 20-degree temp change during ride

It's forecast to be 40* when I leave for my ride tomorrow, and 60* when I'm scheduled to be finished. any ideas on how I should dress for this? Leaving later isn't an option, so the temperature change is what it is.

So I know the Madone Pro has a shorter headtube, but how much of a difference does this really make? I copied a couple images off of treks website and did an overlay to look at the two at the same time. You can see there is not much difference... http://carlpfranger.com/madone1.jpg ...
