Don't let snow and ice discourage you this winter. The key element to year-round cycling is proper attire! Check out this winter cycling forum to chat with other ice bike fanatics.

  1. Sticky Thread Sticky: Post your winter bike pics.

Like the thread title says. Just curious what everyone is riding, maybe throw in location/temp/conditions/etc. Here is mine (obvious summer picture): http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/9977/p1010071td8.jpg Specs: 1983? Schwinn World, purchased for 3 dollars sans wheels. Old Suzue...

  2. Sticky Thread Sticky: Today, I Wore...

To compliment the "winter clothing guide" sticky I thought it would be good to build a "database" thread that simply says, I wore X today at Y temperature. It might also be good to note sky and wind conditions as well as duration of ride. This would be a very handy reference for beginners as...

  3. Sticky Thread Sticky: Making Your Own Studded Tyres

These directions come from The Edmonton Bicycle Commuter's Society, I volunteer there and you will also find these instructions at icebike.org This is what you need to make your very own studded tire: 1. One tire. You need a tire with knobs big enough to support the stud. 2. 50 (approx.)...

  4. Sticky Thread Sticky: winter clothing guide??

Hi, I've been off a bike for about 5 months and I'm getting FAT again :( I need to get back out and ride but it's cold in Eastern Pennsylvania. Could you give me some ideas on what you die hard guys/gals where in the winter. For example a 20 degree ride day - what would you wear. So please...

  1. Pressure for winter studded tires

I just changed over to my Nokian Hakkapeliitta W106 winter tires and I am dogging while ridding into the office. The max recommended pressure on these puppies is 65 psi. At that pressure and with the knobs and studs my 1:20 21-mile ride now takes me 1:45. Last year I think I progressively...

  4. eye tearing

My eyes tear when temps dip below ~15F. To date, I've only used wraparound safety glasses (good coverage). I have several years of winter commuting and have basically just dealt with the tearing. But is there a solution to this...other than ski goggles ($$$)?? And how bike-friendly are goggles...

the first cold temps around 20 degrees here in the mornings have left me unable to shift gears in the back until early afternoon when it warms up. Has anyone else experienced this and have you found any solutions?

  6. Toe Covers for MBT shoes?

Hi, I am looking for a bit more wind/warmth protection for my MTB Specialized Taho shoes. Yesterday I bought the Pearl Izumi Cyclone Toe Covers size L/XL and found that they did not fit ( the hole in the sole did not clear the SPD cleat and they made the shoe fit to tightly around my foot)...

  7. advice on caring for my new lake MXZ302s?

I just got my new Lake MXZ302s and they make me wish it were cold. (at least in the winter forum we can agree that 45 degrees F isn't cold) I did a fair amount of research before buying them and I remember two care tips. First, it would be a good idea to use something to protect the leather - a...

  9. Best gloves/mittens for sub-zero temp

My wife once got frostbite in both her hands, and since then, has been very susceptible to cold in her hands. We've experimented with a couple of gloves, and none of them have given remotely near the kind of insulation she has needed. Does anyone know of something good to wear to get through the...

  10. Realistic Studded Tire Advice

I live in the Midwest. We get ice, but it generally doesn't stick around. However, I commute in the morning, so if there's ice on the road, I'm probably going to be on it. The problem is that we'll get ice, and then we won't have any for the next week, etc. Should I just put on the studded...

  12. How many add winter emergency supplies to their kit?

I tend to be cautious and keep a first aid kit as well as tools in my bike kit. Now that the cold, winter weather season has arrived I've added winter emergency kits to both my truck and the panniers on my bike. I'm wondering how many others add a winter emergency kit to their bikes? Clearly,...

  15. jacket

Hi everyone. I moved to Portland, OR about 6 months ago and am very confused as to how to get ready for winter cycling. I got a Northface Varius Guide Insulated Hyvent jacket. It's very warm but its a bit too much for riding. It is so thick that I can't layer clothing and I just feel too bundled up...

Like - riding through fresh snow - big fat snowflakes - how clean the air feels - sun off the snow - people thinking you are mad and/or have ninja bike skills - riding down a deserted, silent bike path or foot trail and everything is hushed and still - when it's over

Hi, I have Shimano A520 SPD pedals and Specialized Taho MTB SPD shoes. So far this fall I have been able to pedal with no cold toes in temps down to 45 degrees but I want to 'be prepared' for temps down to 32 degrees(F). ( I have no intention of riding in the rain/snow...) I have been...
