A few new questions (working up to the project) first frame.
good afternoon,
Ive been posting a bunch on various aspects of me wanting to build a frame.
The inputs and replies have been very helpfull.
again Ill do fillet braze when ready to roll but im not quite there yet as I have a few rudimentary things to work out and ask of you experienced builders/designers.
Im 5' 10" 247LB short legs long torso current daily ride is a surly cross check size 50 the head tube is way short as is the TT. over 5" stack height with a riser stem to get bars level with seat.
Id like to do sport tour layout cyclocross light I guess with sloped top tube ,HT will need to be tall.
a few things im having trouble deciding on.
1)wheel size My original desire was to use 700C But Im now thinking 26" would be a good way to go (I read SJSC article about 26" wheels) 26" makes sence, But Ive got the 26" is not Cool thing stuck in my head (I have a good set of 26" wheels I can use)
2) Brakes I was thinking of using the new Tektro Long reach side pulls 73mm, My thinking was they would easier to do (no Bosses to get right) and no nasty canti related problems. I was advised against the side pulls due to my size/ weight???
Your thoughts please! the Shimano 105 single pivot brakes on my 1992 road bike (sheldon Browns favorite single pivot brakes) work fine often better than my cantis
3) Cables I want to top mount all my cables (prevent auto shift and make room for kickstand) Ill route cables under top tube and follow the seat stay or chainstay for RD . should I do exposed cable then start/terminate with housing or run housing all the way (like my old facon road bike)
4) Fork I have no way to bend OVAL tubing so I was looking at a pre bent crown but the only ones I see that will work with wide tires /fenders are for 1" steer tubes will this be an issue??
This is it for now with these questions settled I can draw out the design and order tubing/fittings .

Just my opinion but I'd go with 700c wheels for someone your size. 26" or 650c is great for small riders but small you ain't.
For the brakes, I've never used the Tektro calipers but considering you are fillet brazing the entire frame I'm not sure what your hesitancy over cantilevers is based on - I'd just go ahead with them.
Many older road bikes used above the bottom bracket cable routing. These used exposed wire not full length cabling.
Bending forks blades is not that hard. There are templates out on the internet so you can make a mandrel of wood. I've used one and had no real issue. That said, there are several good straight blade fork crowns on the market. 1" steel steerer is tried and true. No worries although 1-1/8" headsets tend to be tougher which is a good thing if you are planning on riding off road a lot.

The part you actually bend tends to be round they may be oval higher up on the blades, but where the drops go is round.
1" stearing tube is fine or better for what you have in mind. It just depends on your level of comitment to the fat head tube. I am somewhat comited because I like to buy good parts and them move them to new frames if I want to try something different frame wise. So I am trying to keep everything the same and the MTB standard seems to be the way things are going. But optimally 1" is all you need on the kind of bike you are proposing.

Im kind of liking the bent crown straight blade look but I cant seem to find a pre bent crown for 1 1/8" that is CROSS /touring size (wider tires) only thing ive seen thats wide enough is for 1" steerer.
henry james crown is a 3 deg offset vs a 7 deg for what ive seen on NOVAs site . Lon at Nova has been a big help, though I havnt ordered tubing yet (no time to work on project right now ).
