Broken rear derailleur hanger on a steel frame, repair?

I've been advised to repost in this forum:

I've recently heard of two decent quality older steel frames with a broken rear dropout or derailleur hanger broken off. Is this fixable? If so how should it be fixed and what would be a reasonable cost?

I'm assuming the damaged dropout would have to be cut off and a new one welded or brazed into place (obviously I'm no welder and dont plan to do this myself).

I'm in Raleigh, NC. Anyone know a good builder near me? I travel a bit so I'd be interested in good builders in SC and VA.

bikeschool.com has run frame building classes for a long time, has industry links on their site.. graduates that set up shop.
Of course, if you walk into your brick and mortar bike shop and repeat this question,
that may be more effective.

Such as it is .. if you can order the dropout part thru the bike shop
most any welding shop can do the torch work,
then you bring it back to the bike shop for final adjustments.

it's very fixable. The repair depends on how the break happened and if the parts are available. If there is a break and the parts are available, the best technique is to tig weld the old parts back together. If nothing else, a dropout replacement is generally possible.

hi. It is a straight forward easy repair for any competent frame builder. It will need to be heated, so obviously you need to plan for a repaint. I live in Columbus Ohio. I've sent work to Greenville SC. Maybe if you google frame builder and insert your city name something will pop up.

Good Luck
