frame mods

I have a steel tandem trek that I picked up very cheap. The only problem is that it turns out to be to large for me or my wife. Has anyone ever cut down a steel frame tandem? Is this a really bad idea or could it be done?

It's a lot of work ($$) and it probably is a bad idea.

I have a friend who has been a certified code welder for 40+ years and does a lot of fab work. I am going to have him take a look and see what he thinks. If it can be done right I am confident he can do it. I was looking at the frame tonight and the only tubes that need modified are the top tube (both capt and stoker needs moved lower on the seat tube) and the seat stays will need to be lowered on the stoker seat tube. It really doesnt look that bad.

a good welder can do the job. It would be easier to get new tubes and just trash the old tubes. Tubes are not expensive. See the suppliers thread

Thanks. According to what I can find my tandem is made from True Temper Verus 4130 Chromoly. Is there any problem with using a diffrent 4130 or should I locate the True Temper Verus?

no problem mixing tubes, but you can get Verus tubes from Henry James.
