Vent holes...

I did a search on these and see that some advocate sealing them.

I have a 1973 Raleigh 531 frame. The drive side seat stay only has a single vent hole, where all others have 2 where needed. Chain stays vent into the BB and each have a hole on the smaller end, etc. This made things a PITA when I frame savered the frame... crap shot out all over, and that stay took 2+ weeks to dry. I was thinking about drilling a 2nd vent hole for this one. The lower one on this stay is missing. The top one is there.

Good idea? Or not?

Thanks,
Chris

It was in the summer when I did it IIRC. Having the top vent hole but not the bottom would allow any moisture that got in to just sit there. I asked Chris Kvale about it (I had him redo the fork crown race seat per another thread), and he told me to just drill another hole, but wanted to run it by you guys and see what you thought. I'm not sure if this was an idiosyncrasy with this particular frame, or if this was std. Raleigh practice at the time or what. I couldn't find any pictures with close ups to see what they may have done on similar vintage frames. Might have depended on how many pints at lunch

Two things
1. Never use Raleigh as an example for whats right/proper.
2. Kvale knows his stuff.

Went with Chris Kvale's counsel and drilled it. Went great, looks like it was always there. Thanks.
