HELP IDENTIFY BUILDER. Lugged Frame w/Columbus Air tubeset.
Hello,
I recently got my hands on a very interesting and unique bike. I posted about it in the Classic and Vintage forum, and got directed over here. With some research I figured out that the frame uses a Columbus AIR tubeset, one of the first aero tubesets made. The components, a mix of Dura Ace 7400 and Dura-Ace 7300 AX date it to the mid 80s. I dont know the history of the bike, but I picked it up in the SF Bay Area. It has been suggested that maybe the frame was built by a so-cal builder. I appreciate any info, Thanks.

I am not sure why they would direct you here, framebuilders aren't necessarily experts on other people's work. C&V is the place for questions like this. It is an interesting frame though

I was just hoping someone might be able to recognize the lug work or something.

looks like someone went crazy with a drill press and file on those lugs. Unless you can find a similar bike, my guess is that you aren't going to find a builder.

Ok... I've only been paying attention to custom frames for a little bit now... but was that single bolt directly to the back of the post a thing? Just screwing it in like that? Unless that was a thing and worked better than it looked like it should.. I would tend to think that this was made by someone without a lot of experience, as a mechanic or builder.

I see that the decal on the underside of the down tube indicates it was painted or repainted buy Cycle Art in Southern CA. They probably know the builder. Give them a call.

All I can say is that the serrated lugs remind me of Columbine lugs. Not quite as ornate though.

Yeah, contacting cycleart is probably the way to go.

OP; Noting that the tips of the lugs have not be thinned out to the ends nor rounded suggests this may be a production bike. Relatively speaking it looks competently built. How does it ride and handle?

It has great geometry, Im happy with it because it just happened to fit me perfectly, even with the stem original stem. Because of the flattened tube shapes the rear end is super whippy though... lol its vertically stiff and laterally compliant.
