Bike Forums a Gold Mine.

Another thread really got me to thinking. I wonder how much revenue this site generates for LBS's, online retailers, Ebay and the like? I know there is no way to measure it but it has to be a HUGE amount. I blame most of the money i have spent on this forum. :)

I know that Joe gets a "kickback" of sorts from Nashbar, Performance and maybe some others that use a link here to access their site and purchase but i suspect that accounts for a very small amount of the $ actually spent.

So basically all of the $ that is generated is simply bonus cash for these entities. Can someone elaborate on this a little more, since i likely don't have a full understanding of how it works? If nothing else does anyone else agree that a lot of these companies should be sending Joe and extra fruit cake come Christmas time?

WTF has Joe ever done to you?!

fruit cake?

;)

Maybe send him an extra burrito.

:D

I'm not talking about the ads really. I am just talking about the money generated by this forums existance. Think of how many people make a purchase based on something they learned here.

Well since mention of an LBS, good or bad, usually spawns a "I hate the LBS" rantathon from the eight guys that hate the LBS and everytime someone asks where they can get a part a bunch of people chime in about Nashbar giving them away free wrapped in twenties, don't see a staggering benefit for the LBS. I have sent a lot of customers to this forum however, and I have had people from the forum stop by and visit when they were in Raleigh.

How many people have messed something up from bad advice given here...everything is a double edged sword...

Funny, i haven't seen all that much bad advice. Especially if you have the sense to double check it.

I have definitely bought loads of things (from all sources, i.e. online, ebay & LBS) after learning about them on the forum.

Unfortunately for us Europeans buying stuff from Nashbar and Performance is not so convenient as the stuff takes longer to get here (assuming they are prepared to deliver here) and there are sometimes customs charges/ hassles to deal with.

Maybe Joe should get some European sponsors as well

Actually, I make less then $100 a month from the affiliate links... but still, that covers my red bull habit. ;)

I have played with the idea of removing the google ads in push users to buy from there LBS. The internet is killing alot of smaller bike shops, and I would hate to be a contributing factor. If I can get upgraded memberships to cover the cost of running the forum, I plan on doing just that.

The weird thing is that I don't see such sentiments repeated nearly so frequently on other boards...I don't know if mods get rid of it or if it's just a lack of certain members there.
The other thing that I've noticed is that people on here will refer others to mail order sites for stuff that's not going to be any cheaper online (e.g. random little small parts any LBS has) but they're willing to pay for shipping and wait.
At least you're getting some visitors. I've had maybe 3 or 4 through the site.
