The guy probably doesn't even know that he just invented a recumbent. With a safety cage?

If you don't have a heart attack pedaling it....it may offer a little safety. Instead of calling it a safe bike, he should market it as a slow car.....

Still looks like it would be easily crushed by a large truck rather than "pushed aside" as he suggests, IMHO.

A truly magnificent concept. Definitive comment (as so often) can be found here (entry for Tuesday, April 14th):

Points out safety features and doesn't even show a simulated demonstration of said safety features in action.
Fail.
Fail.

Most interesting bike. I agree it needs some crash testing before announcing it is the "safest bike".
Just like the ROPS on a tractor, the roll cage is worthless without the seatbelt, but that certainly would take some time to get used to.
In some situations, it may be preferable to be thrown clear of one's bicycle. In other situations, having the full roll protection would be preferable.
Whiplash is a problem with low speed automobile accidents, perhaps made worse by all of the new "safety equipment". Of course, that safety equipment does help in the high speed accidents.

Why is the cycling community so against progress?.....................ha ha ha........................
Looks like a heavy and probably slow recumbent with a questionable seat, on more than one level.

Bike Snob is wrong on one account, it's not like a Giant Revive, it's like a Burley Koosah.
Babel Bike:
Burley:
The cage, of course, does absolutely nothing to protect the lower body.

My thoughts exactly. And I'll bet that cage would crumble if hit by even a small car at a relatively low speed. I can also think of a lot of situations in which the Babel Bike would be very dangerous, like: Falling over [or getting pushed over or landing on] onto a protruding object- and being strapped in, your torso is forced to absorb the impact impact and/or puncture; whereas on a traditional bike, you at least have a chance of being thrown completely free- or at least deflecting off of the object, as opposed to being held in place, to absorb the full damage.

Pick it apart all you want. My guess is in real world falls and crashes it WOULD be safer. Not a lot, but some.

As pointed out, it would not protect the legs from something like a sideswipe which typically isn't 100% square on (plus the bike twists with the impact).
One would have to consider what types of accidents one is protecting from. Road rash from single bike accidents is rarely fatal, or particularly causing great disability. On the other hand, bike vs motor vehicle can be much more damaging, so the cage is only moderately protecting.
Of course, from a life standpoint, protecting the head, neck, heart, lungs, and spine are all of vital importance. Badly broken arms and legs can heal.
