Gonna go on tour up in Oregon in late July..Gonna spoke out from the Medford area...SO the weight won't be unreasonably hefty..Could be 30 lbs...
I recently converted my old beat up frame (Scott) to a Surly Cross check..The bike is fine for weight. BUt , I transfered the fairly new Velocity V's from the Scott to the Surly frame..
SO, think the Velocity V's are built for carrying much weight...My mechanic at the LBS recommended the Surly frame...When the Velocity v's go, I will change out the wheelset for a rim that will carry a wider tire..The mechanic said that Velocites are built with a softer metal. Often the spokes pull through the rims..he says.
So for now..WOuld you go touring with Velocities.?

Im not I believe your mechanic when he says that they pull through the rim. I just built up a set and these things can take high tension. Velocity said 110-120kgf. I think they could take more, but I decided to stay within those margines. These rims I see used on tandems a lot, thats 400 pounds of weight so i doubt its a problem for one touring bike. They would be among my top choice

Velocity Dyads are rated for tandems.
Your rims will be fine.

Enjoy your trip

Phanthom cow...What added crediance to his claim..(In fact I mentioned it first.!) It happened to me just like that..cracks about the hole where the nipple is...He agreed...
If not used for light touring I would not give it another thought...I have been buying Velocities for my second road bike...Bought like four of them now.

The DeepV is pretty tough, lots of fixie guys use them, lots of tandems use them. I have seen far more Mavics pull through than Velocitys(Actually, zero for the Velocity so far.)

As usual I agree with my fellow pro mechanic. There is a bias by some shops and mechanics towards the older more established name rims/wheels. I have probably built more Mavic wheels than any other brand. This is because they have been around so long. I like Velocity products and as a company they are very easy to deal with. The Deep V is a fine sturdy rim and I have used it in a number of applications. It should serve your purpose just fine!

Deep V is also very stiff. When i was building them up a few weeks ago i noticed that i had almost no lateral flex at all when pre stressing. Where with my 0 lites theres a rather large amount

Rev. Chuck..This mechanic seems to like Mavics, I sense...But, I was trying to recall the Velocity that the rim cracked..It was Velocitys...But not so sure it the was the Deep V model.. Have considered carting up my stuff to Oregon in my trailer..But favor mailing the stuff so I do not have to carry it at all..Then carry a lite load between cities...
Trailers take up lots of space on the Amtrak.

The Mavic is a good rim, but recently I have had some trouble with their lighter rims, Open Pro, Reflex, and what was the 517. Several of them cracked at the eyelet after a few thousand miles. Even with VERY careful tensioning I could not get the Reflex to hold up. Of course a more fair comparison to the Deep V would be a cxp33, that is a tough rim

I had a MA3 crack after 600 miles. Then a bit of research reveled it is prone to cracking. My velocity deep v and the arrowheads have been rock steady. Plus they look nicer too.

Full time mechanic here, and I build with both brands. Mavic's seem like they wear slightly longer with grit and water on the sides, but Velocity does not have a rim with the chronic seam-joint originating creak of Mavic Reflex/Open Pro rims. Deep V's will work for some load carrying and you can use as wide as a 28c tire, especially if it's a wire bead.
