It took me a while to find the General Cycling Discussion Forum

I wonder why we got promoted to the top of the list?

Did we pay the penance by taking up the rear for long enough?

I look forward to enjoying the rarified air up here in first place, and not having to smell everyone ahead of us.

I hope this post doesn't jinx us...

,,,,,,,,,,,,,A few months back maybe a year someone wanted to petition to have this sub-forum moved to the top ,I think general consensus was to stay where we were,,, more to the bottom, and have everybody look for us,,,,,

I've always figured these forums should be arranged alphabetically.

I think that they are in alphabetic order, except for this one... So I looked in the appropriate alphabetic location when it wasn't at the bottom.

Maybe they are trying to give new users a generic forum as the first one they see.

Most of them are in alphabetical order, but if they were completely in alphabetical order the Recreational & Cyclocross subforum would be closer to the bottom, and the Fixed Gear Freestyle would be further up.

It's like vitamins in a pharmacy ... so tempting to get in there and put them in alphabetical order.

IIRC R&C started life as Cyclocross and kept its position when it was renamed.

Putting "General" at the bottom at least forces people to scroll down past all the specialized forums (that are more likely to have answers to their questions) instead of posting in the first forum they come to.

the idea was to put general up top where new users could find it and move A&S somewhere that the uninitiated would never see it. We got the first half, not the second. Apparently this is some sort of super-admin voodoo, not sure when or if the second move is going to happen. I understand that people might not get the right forum for their question, but they never get that right anyway. If a thread really doesn't belong, we move threads all the time, just report it.

The forums are assigned a number, the order is pretty arbitrary so alphabetical makes sense as a starting point

Hahahaha. Ok, now put it back! Next time ask!

Last night I went to go on General, and it was gone. Never thought to look at the top. Who'd figured?

In one forum site, everything is alphabetized except for recumbents being on the bottom. I get what they're saying... Being on the top is kind of nice though- I think I like it!

I'm going to take a wild stabbing guess that they added 'bents last. I wonder how General ended up last on this forum, that was before my time

Hmmm,
I seem to recall many, many, years ago, that general discussion started at top of subfora list for many of the reasons discussed in the above prior posts. Within several months, it was relocated to the bottom of the list as it became more and more apparent that it was becoming "Bloated' with the majority of posts, as it was created to be the "Catch All" subforum.
Of course this was BITD when "Bike Forums" was a much wilder and woolier forum than the PC'D version we all enjoy today.

If you change A&S's name to D&D (Death and Destruction) it might move down the list a little bit.

Actually if you switched their name around to "Safety (& Advocacy)", you could alphabetically move them close to the bottom.

I've been here since 2003, and I don't recall that General was ever at the top. But somehow it does seem to me it might possibly have been somewhere in the middle.

Back then there were significantly fewer sub forums and it seems to me that they were just left where they were added. Not alphabetical ... perhaps according to their number (which we can't see anymore).

Then as more sub forums were added there was some attempt to alphabetize them and organise them, but there has always been at least one subforum out of order.

Loved your comment about alphabetizing the vitamins, that is something my daughter wants to do.

How about "advertising dollars"? As at least one principal reason for any kind of changes.

Anyone who wanders in for the first time just might pick a general topic and then move on.

A&S is the greatest sub forum ever. The drama is unbelievable.
98% of the regulars in there admit to breaking every basic rule of the road each time they ride by running stops, rolling lights and riding however they want based upon their own personal definition of riding safely(which differs wildly btw)while at the same time they dedicate their lives to hunting down and posting every piece of news related to the transgressions of every other mode of transportation.
Their communal hatred of law enforcement officials is absolutely scary.

I'm pretty sure that any number of people have gone into A&S because they thought they had something to say about those subjects, but found out it's a cesspool of trolling and nastiness. And then a significant number of those people left, never to return. And it always has been that way, according to some of the ex-sticky threads that were in there. People are always posting threads in inappropriate places, just report them
