The first thought I had after reading he hit the curb is the Dutch will probably make all curbs bike friendly in my lifetime. When the Dutch redo a bike path they replace the 90 degree curb with a friendlier version.

From the pics, the Serotta fits Kerry like a glove. Just the right amount of seatpost showing. Bars are maybe just a hair lower than saddle. Not too stretched out, but not uncomfortably crouched down either. I would say that this pic is almost textbook what I would suggest a taller rider should aspire to as far as bicycle fit.

Sorry to hear about your hip, but you especially as a bent rider should know that the simple logic of riding a bent means a person has less distance to fall. That does make bents on average safer.

Yes it is good to see that some high gov officials ride. Note---former President Bush is a very fit rider, and rides with wounded warriors every year.

Hip replacement surgery involves cutting off the hip ball from the end of the femur and machining the femur itself. A hole is bored/reamed into the femur to accept the stem of the prosthesis. I imagine that a femur fracture in the vicinity of the prosthesis could be complicated to repair depending on what sort of fracture it is and how the prosthesis is affected. The good news is that even if extensive work is required, he can probably be semi-mobile with a walker in a day or two. If everything goes well, he might be back on his bike in six to eight weeks. Modern orthopedic surgery is nothing short of a miracle.

It is never enjoyable to read/hear of a cyclist that is injured.
But it is always nice to hear that a cyclist will make a full recovery. That is good news for all of us that crash.

I ride recumbents. I like recumbents and I'll never go back for the majority of miles that I ride. For riding in urban areas, however, I prefer my DF beater bike because it's so much easier to twist your torso look side-to-side at intersections. On a recumbent you have to lean forward before you can twist because your shoulders are leaning against the comfy backrest. When I bought my first recumbent the first thing the sales guy asked me was what kind of rear view mirror I was used to because you can't twist around to look back like you can on a DF bike.
Does anybody here know how Kerry actually fell? One common type of bike fall, even for experienced riders, involves riding off the road and trying to steer back on. If your front wheel doesn't roll back onto the pavement you'll fall over on your side and, whether on a DF bike or on a recumbent, usually hit hip first. That's what I did on my recumbent tandem and I have a personal friend who did the same thing, but on a DF bike, with the same result. It's not hard for me to imagine that's what Kerry might have done too.

The simple fact is that bents are safer. Since on most bents you are lower to the ground there is less distance to fall. And again, arriving at the scene of an accident feet first is far better than head first. Another reason is that on some bents like my LWB Stratus, you have superior braking, so you might not have an accident in the first place.

I'd have more interest in seeing my local city & county officials --- riding. See what bikes, if ay high end bikes they have.
