New (Old) Fixie
I just finished building my first fixie and began riding a short daily commute with it. I used a Raleigh frame (probably from an old three-speed), added Weinmann wheels (on sale at Velomine), Schwalbe tires, alloy bullhorn bars, and a BMX short-pull front brake lever. I kept the ancient steel front brake, which works surprisingly well with new pads. Also kept the original Nervar cottered crankset although the chrome is horribly pitted. Kept the original 51T chainring and ditched the 40T. Added a Soma 21T track cog, yielding 65.6 wimpy gear inches.
Total investment: about $160. The experience of building and riding the beast: priceless.
