I transitioned from MTB > Hybrid > Road > Cross

The Hybrid was faster than the MTB, the road bike was faster than the hybrid bike, but I could never make the same speed on the Road bike when I was on the cross bike even with road tires. Maybe it was the extra 8lbs on the cross bike, the 32mm tires, or the gearing. Up hill, flats, downhills; when I seriously attack my local segments I come seconds short even if I felt like I was flying. After all the tests, the road bike improves my performance even moreso because I have the confidence that I'm riding on my fastest bike.

Just completed a nice 42 mile ride earning a cool badge on Strava. Seriously thinking about getting some shoes.

Absolutely necessary if you want to get the most out of your bike. I use Crankbrothers egg-beater 3's because I do a lot of riding with lights and traffic so I need to be very quick in and out of them. The SPD pedals always took me too long to snap back into.

Well, since I just wil still have one bike, I'm looking at some of the dual sided pedals with normal pedals on one side, and clipless on the other.

I have the dual sided on my grocery grabber and they are great! Have taken the bike on some club rides using my clipless sandals and can hang on with the 20/22mph group drafting the guys.

Congratulations on your weight loss, 4powells! I have both a hybrid (Trek 7.4, disc) and a road bike (Trek 1500). I also use a (Polar M400) HR monitor. I have some set routes that I regularly ride. From my own personal riding experience, I have noticed the following when riding the same route with my different bikes:
  • Speed: Faster on the road bike
  • HR: Higher on the Hybrid
  • Calories: More calories on the hybrid
So, if I measure my performance by speed, then for me the road bike is slightly faster over the same distance. However, if I'm trying to lose weight and want to expend a few extra calories I use my hybrid, or try for a harder workout on my road bike.
