Using Strava for a two day ride

I'm doing the Seattle to Portland (STP) ride in a few weeks. I use Strava on my iPhone when I ride. My question is, if I pause Strava after the first day and then resume when I start the second day, will there be issues with recording the ride? I've never tried using it this way before, and am afraid that I will somehow lose the first day's ride doing it this way. I know I can do it as two separate rides, but it will give me a bigger sense of accomplishment seeing all the stats in one ride.

I wouldn't bother. Just do it separately.

I agree no point into trying to make it seem like your did one big ride when you didn't.

I wouldn't bother either, but you can export the file from Strava and combine 'em.

If you are stopping, sleeping and then resuming the next day, it kind of IS two separate rides.

Doesn't diminish the accomplishment one bit, though.

I think tracking this as two rides would make the most sense. If you were doing the STP in one day then the entire segment as one ride would make sense.

Will your iPhone battery last for the time it will take you to ride each day?

BTW, STP is a great ride. Have fun!

I agree with everyone else. Just separate rides. That way you can also compare days easier. But if you still want to record as one long ride, just test it out ahead of time. Take a lap around the block, pause it, and then do another the next day.

Also, if you don't have a plan for keeping your phone charged already, Topeak makes a great battery back that mounts on your bike and lasts a pretty long time.

You can pause it, but if your phone shuts down, glitches, or has any other issues, your ride from day 1 will be lost.

If you have a garmin, you could just turn the garmin off at the end of day one and continue the ride the next day, I've done that before, but the longest I've had the garmin turned off was a few hours. Which is about the same amount of time that I've paused strava before when not using my garmin.

Thanks for the replies. You guys are right, I should probably just record it as two separate rides. My reasoning for wanting to record it one one ride was in part for posting on social media, a sort of "look what I accomplished!" post. I'll just have to find a different way to do so. It's not worth the possibility of losing the first day's data to do so. Appreciate the feedback.

It looks like NBC Sports will have an application for the iPhone/iPad/Android. It's $20.

This isn't necessarily true. I've had Strava cause a crash/soft reboot of my iphone while I was auto-paused about an hour into a 6 hour ride and the activity was preserved after the reboot. I had to manually click the record button again as the auto-pause was not activated for some reason after the reboot.

You can see it here if you're curious.

To the OP, just record as two rides, download each GPX file and combine with any number of GPX merge sites. I've used the one linked below to combine rides/races where I split them up initially to make sure I had a single GPX for the race.

Sweet, I wasn't sure how well it would do at restoring the data. Seems it must have a built in save feature to avoid losing data. I still would be worried about losing it though.

I was hoping that the Seattle to Portland ride was added as a new stage in the TdF!
