I live three blocks from work. The bike trail is two blocks from home.

Nothing says that a ride to work has to be on the shortest route. I often used to extend my commute to put in extra miles.A short distance to work is a golden opportunity

Bikes: Many bikes in three states and two countries, mainly riding Moots Vamoots, Lynskey R265 disc and a Spot Denver Zephyr nowadays

I think from what I can tell a Hybrid bike is the most suited for me. I am 51 years old, 6'1" 230 pounds. Also I am used to these old Shimano shifters- can you still get them or am I getting to goofy? Any help on what to get appreciated. Thanks
Schwinns are no longer Schwinns, as above posters have pointed out, but you can still buy a bike from the Schwinn legacy. Richard Schwinn is now at Waterford Bikes.

I have looked at Waterford bikes because I knew how they started. Just too pricey for me. To tell the truth I might just keep riding my old Schwinn for a couple more years.

During and after a 25 mile ride today I gave the idea of a road bike a lot of thought. I will look at new Schwinn road bikes too. Thanks for the input!

$980 for a bike with entry level components? Seems a bit expensive for a bike that comes with Sora drivetrain and Tektro brakes. There's a few reviews out there but most of them degenerate into rants about Schwinn trying to improve their image with those who wouldn't ever consider buying a bike from WalMart or Target. I haven't owned a Schwinn since the dark ages when I was a kid. Once I had a quality bicycle (Fiorelli 10 speed), the the Schwinn name lost its luster. I worked in a bike shop at a time when Schwinn imported Panasonic bikes and stamped the Schwinn logo (Schwinn approved to be accurate) on them. You could buy the identical bike under the Schwinn or Panasonic name and pay 30% more for the Schwinn. That's probably true today to since Doral manufactures so many different brands in the same factory.

Your idea to keep your current bike makes a lot of sense compared to spending nearly $1K on this bike.

Sorry guys. Like I said it is a Schwinn or nothing. Trying to talk me out of this is a waste of all our time. I thought I clearly stated that in the first post. I am going to see if I can delete this thing and give up on this forum.
