Looked like a troll to me right from the start. That's why I had a little fun with my first response.
I have to assume that anyone that concerned over a bike so valuable would have made inquiries prior to signing a lease?
Also, if you can afford a 20k bike I think you can afford a form of renters insurance that would cover the bike in the apartment or in the on premise storage.
The reference to 'possible bike thieves living in the same apartment' was also sufficiently goofy to warrant my troll suspicions btw

Yes. I agree.

Also consider that more than theft is at stake. People who don't understand bikes could easily stumble against and damage an expensive one, making knocking it over. Inadvertently. Wouldn't need to be on purpose.

I don't have much advice on the issue w/the apartment complex except maybe to go up one management level and try to have a calm discussion w/that person about options and the value of the bike and the risk of damage.

+1

You are moving YOUR property to and from YOUR residence, and you are well within your right to do so. Should you choose to use the bike storage facility its at your discretion (i highly doubt anyone would be liable for stolen property within the premises). A few years ago I worked for an apartment developer and one of my tasks was to issue notices to breaches of covenant contracts (a contract with a list of do's and don'ts relating to amenity that the occupant signs before moving in). But they can't legally enforce these. I would politely tell them to **** off or you'll call the police.

Found it, and you're right ... the bicycle increased in price by $5000 in a matter of minutes.

So maybe this is trolling, BUT, no matter what the office said, if there's nothing in print within the confines of the lease, bring the bike in.

What's in it for the troll? Why would someone waste time with this? We had the electric bike guy recently, probably had some economic interest. This one I can't figure.

Don't know ... but it is an interesting way to introduce yourself and say, "I have a $20,000 bike".

Besides, I think the office will not take responsibility if my bike is stolen at the bike storage.

Guys, what should I do? I can`t move out and want to ride a bike.
The guys on RE33it had some great info for you!

What part of bringing a bike through the lobby does mgmt want to prohibit? Wheels on carpet? Then carry it.

I second the previous comment about checking your lease and asking what else cannot be carried through the lobby. Also ask for details on the building insurance policy in the event you need to file a claim.

Finally I would take out a theft insurance rider on my home insurance policy or a separate policy on a $20k bike.

Lawyer up. Review the lease agreement and argue the case. Promise to wipe down the tires before entering the building. Show the invoice to support the 20k cost.

Why bother to ask the BF to provide answers to a question that only the poster or someone familiar with the unique local situation/issues could answer? Trolling seems like a reasonable explanation.

I never accuse people of being trolls....but there's always a first time, and this is it!

No one with a $20K bike would even remotely consider locking it up in a communal bike-storage room! Put it in there, and it's going bye-bye; getting stripped or damaged, in short order.

If this were real, I would:

a)Move
b)Keep the bike in the apartment, and let the management evict you or do whatever they want to try and do, and see how far they get.
c)Sell the bike and use the proceeds for a down-payment on a house!

Pro race bike? leave it at home , commute on a Brompton , or Bike Friday Tikit*, that folds
and you can put in a bag and carry in that way.

*[more custom component & fitting options , frames made in Oregon..]

...but be sure and read the policy very carefully, as it well may not cover the bike being stored in a non-living area.

Make a big cardboard cut-out of a car, and paint it up to look like a car. When you get home, cover the bike with the cardboard, and carry it in....surely, they don't have any prohibitions against carrying a car through the lobby, eh?

If you live where I live, and people are making all cash offers on $1M homes. And getting in the market requires a $400k down payment, you might just make that bike splurge before the down payment. Especially since housing prices are totally mismatched with incomes.

If you got that kind of money to spend on a bicycle, you do not ask for advice on the internet, you let your lawyer do the talking for you.

I will assume you are a responsible person, but when you live anywhere like an apartment, condo, or co-op apartment, etc. Some big brother make rules that effect everyone living under or on that common ground.

Because of idiots, or potential civil litigation.

I just looked at them, and they were $5,000-8,000. So, I was also wondering about this story.

Maybe it was something like a Gold Plated Groupo, or Special Edition 1 of 13.
