Bikes: I never learned to ride a bike. It is my deepest shame.

Make a proper thorough business plan and see if it makes sense and if you can live off it (if that is your plan). If there is a need and you are set up properly then there is no reason why not.

+1 on Business Plan
Start with good market research. Size the market, assess the existing competition, then decide if the market has room for one more. As an aside, think how you will differentiate yourself from what's already there. Don't forget that not all your competition has a physical presence (think about ebay, online retailers, craigslist, etc). THEN choose with your eyes wide open.

What? The bike shops around here don't provide free maintenance. You get one free adjustment within the first few months of ownership, but that's it.

I realize this thread is 5+ years old, refreshed in October of 2010.
It's one thing to be passionate about cycling...it's another thing to be a good businessman. What you need is a good mix of both. I'm passionate as he!! about cycling - but I'd kill my own business because I don't know squat about running it. But I know someone who is an excellent businessman, and he knows how to run a business, although he has little knowledge about cycling.
If you've got both, then why not give it a shot. But if you only have one piece of that pie then it could be a tough go...

The thread may well be 5+ years old, but the info and opinions are just as valuable to others who may be contemplating opening a shop.

From reading the OP's latest postings, it seems the OP never opened his own shop or opened it and shut it down. He is still soliciting input for his projects as of late last year. Not the type of knowledge base you would expect from someone opening up his own shop and I would think that with the difference in economy in the last 5 years a good thing that he did not open his shop.
