seat adjustment
So about 4 weeks ago? Maybe, I bought an el cheapo bike from wal-mart, not knowing anything except i wanted a road bike. I was able to ride my 12.6 mile trip (to work) in about 14.6 mile average and around 55-57 minutes with my ass and legs hurting and sore. Yesterday I raised my seat about 6 inches. this morning i did the trip at a 15.6 average and in 48ish minutes. Going home in the heat however i did a 15.8 and 47.35 time. ass doesnt hurt legs r good. now i have been riding the last 4-5 weeks but i couldnt believe the difference i was seeing. I love this bike even tho its cheap ($150) but i love it. Im getting ready for the Endless summer watermelon ride that is going on 13 sept. going for my first centry.

Post a pic of you sitting on the bike. If you raised it 6" that first day must have been torture.

Ok so i went out and measured. 4 inches, sry. i had the seat all the way down and seamed like it was right. as i said i knew nothing of bike. so i looked on u tube yesterday and seen the position ur legs should be when ur peddle is down and when its up so thats why i changed it. i can barely touch the ground when im seating as before i could just about have my whole foot on the ground.

Granted, I'm also riding mountain bikes and not road bikes right now, so they might have higher clearance on the crank - I never measured. I don't remember ever touching the ground while seated when I was younger and had a road bike, though.
Regardless, if you were flat-footed on the seat before then you were WAY too low.

Barely touch the ground sitting? I've never been able to touch the ground sitting (unless there's a curb or something to stand on). Good chance your seat could stand to be raised even more. XD There is absolutely no need to have your butt on the seat when you're stopped. The seat should stick into your tailbone instead when you're at a standing stop. This is of course why you should pick a proper sized frame where you can straddle the crossbar without difficulty.

Just raise it until your legs have comfortable enough stretch while riding, and take seat height right out of the equation when stopped. You'll find a good mix. When you get up to height then raising or lowering it a little will work different parts of your legs, so I'm not even sure that there is such thing as an "ideal" height for anyone, either. Just make sure it's as comfortable and efficient (no wasted energy) for you, while riding only.

generic : heel over pedal center , leg straight .. so when you have your foot over the pedal normally
Balls of your feet , there is a trifle of bend in your knees, then you use your flexing ankles as you make the circles with your feet.
