There are loads of them, and the best practice I have found is to find the 10-12 you like and check them each for the specific components you are seeking.

A few from my list:

amazon.com
biketiresdirect.com
aebike.com
niagaracycle.com
benscycle.com
rei.com
ebay.com

There are others, these were just off the top of my head.

Pro Bike Kit and Ribble are usually my go to places for most things. I do find that Chain Reaction has some nice clothes prices though. Performance Bike is another great one. Get on their mailing list and you will get coupons and discounts every day. I buy a lot of little things from them like helmets, shoes, gloves and jerseys. It is hard to beat some of their sales and discounting. For higher end shorts I typically like Chain Reaction or Excel Sports in Colorado.

Buy Road Bikes & Parts at Ribble Cycles | Online Bike Shop
*Chain Reaction Cycles | MTB | Road | TRI | Run
Bikes & Bicycle Accessories at Merlin | UK Online Bike Shop
ProBikeKit USA | Cycling kit, running and triathlon kit

The Euro sites for two reasons:
  1. The dollar is so overvalued right now that it makes no sense to be buying bike goods denominated in the greenback. Or any goods for that matter. Jeez, the Euro is almost at par...
  2. The N. American bike components market is dominated by a cozy little cartel that helps keep prices high for domestic consumers. Why do we pay much higher prices here? Because the manufacturers think we can.

MIT seems to think you are off base:

"
3. Who cares?
Currencies rise, currencies fall. Isn't it a zero-sum game, and for that matter aren't the stakes pretty small in any case? In general, yes. And even if we are now facing an unsustainable dollar overvaluation comparable to that of early 1985, those old enough recall that despite grim warnings of an impending "hard landing", the correction of that overvaluation was almost entirely benign.
"
As far as your cartel commentary - notice many of the discount sites listed. Notice how the discount site prices are, many times, right in line with real prices paid on auction sites like eBay for comparable goods. Some cartel.

In England, bike mfrs can sell parts/groupsets direct. In the US, they can't, so to protect distributors/dealers.

The only negative from buy off shore is to factor in the following.

Credit Card Conversion Fees. Euro to Dollars 3%

Freight, and because it is international air it is high. But you should have an idea fron=m seller.

Customs Clearing Fee charged by DHL & Fed-X This is where they slap you for the "work" of importing your shipment.

Duty Fee of 10% could or could not be charged on order over $200.00, but plan on it.

Do the math, and be an informed consumer.

Totally agree. Know the charges before you order. If at all possible avoid courier services when ordering from offshore.

So you are saying that the key downside to buying from offshore (in order to avoid our over-inflated currency and domestic bike industry cartel) is the following:
  • Money changers (banks and credit card companies) who charge absurd currency conversion fees
  • Shipping company pirates who charge extortionist cross-border 'paperwork' fees and 'duties', and then pocket this all as profit.

It is a fine system we're living in....

Still, all in all, it is far cheaper to import, particularly when paying in Euros.

For Europe and the UK specifically, check out the following UK sites:

Wiggle | Cycle | Run | Swim | Tri-Sports & Bike Shop
Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op | Road & Mountain Bikes from Specialized, Giant & Focus | Cycle Accessories & Clothing.
SJS Cycles Online Bike Shop for Touring, Mountain & Road Bikes and Specialised Bicycle Parts
Bikes | Mountain Bikes | Road Bikes | Cycle Clothing | Tredz Online Bike Shop | Tredz

I've ordered at each of these and they have never let me down.

I would second Wiggle in the UK. Just ordered from them a 105 group set for $150 less than can be found here. The listed prices, payment (and charge) was in US$ so no conversion fee. Shipping was free and duty free. When ordering, web site indicated 8 days (via DHL with tracking), but it arrived in 4!!!

Each shop seems to have a bit different selection. Ribble in the UK seems to have good prices. Niagara as well as Cambria seem to have a good selection of parts. I snag a bit off of E-Bay. It really depends on the part and prices.
