Insect proofing of helmet

So, with the warm temperatures comming, so are those swarms of tiny insects that seem to really like my eyes, mouth, ears and hair.

I got the mouth (breath through nose) and eyes (bike glasses) covered, and I think the helmet may help for the ears. My main beef is that the helmet has vents, and insects will just go in there, and have a party or something. I thought about putting plastic wrap on top of the vents, but that would kill the much needed ventilation during the warm months.

what's next? I thought about a screen, but how to fix it to the helmet without looking dorky? Anyone's done something like that?

The helmet cover sounds like a good idea, but when the temperatures climb to 30C, it might be a bit hot...

I have a headnet like the ones numbnuts and markhr suggested, and it works super good for the woods in intense mosquito season, but maybe I wouldn't wear this on a bike.. :)

Anything else? The idea is not to have hundreds of tiny flies inside the helmet, with no way of shaking them out of my hair, make it summer temperatures friendly, and not looking like a dork. :)

All you have to do is wear a small predatory bird on your helmet.
The insects will clear a path when they see you coming.
I seems to work for Mr. Brown:

wear a cycling cap under your helmet.

also some helmets come with insect nets in them, maybe you could get a new helmet.

Got any models that do?

Cycling cap or do-rag under helmet. Soaks up sweat, keeps bugs out of hair/scalp.

Here's a solution from Oz. (BTW, that's Gordon Taylor, a jolly Scotsman who's biking around the world on his fixed gear. This is him crossing the Nullarbor Plain.)

I've thought about this. You could get some door screen material; cut pieces out to fit over the vents; then glue the pieces using rubber cement or some other glue that you could rub off when the buggy season ends. If you cut them carefully enough, I doubt they would be very noticeable.

I know the LAS Haxial does. Maybe the rest of the LAS line do as well but not sure.

Sweet, thanks for the help.

im probably gonna look into the mesh option. Last year riding in the woods earned me 3 ticks on my head at once :(

I also had bug, bee, and other insect problems. I've just bougtht a new helmet with the screen on the front only, vent holes. It works as advertised, I think the screen increases the intake speed of air. It's a Shain, and claims to be really safe.

bandaidman 04-29-05 01:21 AM

i have a LAS helmet...the little screens really work. i used to stung by a wasp or bee that got trapped under my helmet at least monthly before i bought it. none since

BenyBen 04-29-05 07:29 AM

Very cool! I might decide to fork out the money for it. How much did you pay for it Bandaidman?

Kinda late to the party I know, but I was stung this afternoon. Gotta love the Germans.
