How long do you plan on riding at 30mph? Flat or downhill?

Yes, get yourself a 50 tooth ring in the front and an 11 tooth cog in the back and you'll easily be able to cruise all day at 30+mph. If you don't need a big salary you could also ride as a domestique for many pro teams although they may ask you to change out of your street clothes and wear their team kit.

You have to be able to dial it to 400 watts to go that fast.

400 only gets you to 25. He'll need 650 or more to ride at 30.

I don't know what you're riding but unless it's a bmx or a little kid's bike the gears probably aren't the problem.

So you are looking for gears that will let you defy the laws of physics?

It kinda depends on how fast you can spin your legs. How fast can you spin?

Yes, but I was overcome with adrenaline and testosterone chasing a bunch of jackass teenagers who threw something at me on my commute home one evening.

Ditto, but mine was running FROM two pit bulls this morning. Even then I only hit 28.4mph... But maybe my gearing is wrong. ..

It's your legs that provide speed, doesn't matter what group, The bike will still sit there, until you mount it and apply the power source.

You should be able to get up to ... maybe a bit higher than 30 with a fully shrouded velomobile.

Then, pick out the gears you feel comfortable with.

The actual sprockets and cassettes will be the cheapest part of your entire investment.

How will the bike industry get people to upgrade with that sort of rational thought getting in the way ?

Finding the gearset isnt the challenge. There are lots of gearsets under $100 that can be ridden at 30mph. The hard part is getting the right rider to power them. Now, I could spend thousands on the best gearset ever made and they still will never come close!

For example: Getting a $50 Ross gearset onto a Cervelo might be a bit of a challenge, but getting Mark Cavandish to power at 30 mph? No problem!

A Yugo, even if it has a Ferrari transmission in it, still isn't going to go 200 MPH.

Hahaha! Poor Yugo...the car was only around in the USA for like 5 years, but even 25 years after its demise, it's still the archetype for slowest, cheapest, worst car imaginable! All of which was actually true, but still...

Any bike will do it on a steep enough hill. Just tuck.

Peter Sagan demonstrates in Velo News's Top 10 Descenders of All Time:

On flat ground you want a stolen electric bicycle with the speed governor disabled.

39x14 is enough to briefly get me 30 MPH on flat ground using 700W, although some people can't do that and I need tighter cycling clothes for aerodynamics.

Yeah... It is a luxury car compared to some.

Not many of the old Fiat 500's in the USA.
And the 2CV never was officially imported here.
