It's the parents of the kids who arte out drinking and partying all night, and driving home at 4AM who whould be worried about what people will think (But those never seem to be the ones who do)
Since you have an honorable and legitimate purpose to be out at that time, as long as you've had some experience with bad sun glare, and can see at night....I don't see why it should be a concern- except for the fact that you might encounter the type of driver mentioned above, or or someone coming home from the bar- but whether you're 17 or 43.....your age isn't really going to be a factor with that.
That's the way I'd look at it....but ultimately, if you can't persuade mommy with a little logic, just abide by her wishes. In the long-run/future, you'll be glad that you did. (And it's funny- but it usually works out for the best- women's intuition and all. I know growing up, us guys who listened to our mommies always fared a lot better than the guys who didn't!)

i vote you skip it, just too much for one day. I drive 4 hours to visit my folks several times a year, it does take some effort, even immortal teenagers. Double that and throw in a 100 mile race?
Pass on it. You might be setting yourself up for a big fail. You might get hurt in the race and your ~200 miles from home or some sleep-induced problem driving home. What are your chances of making the next race if that happens?
I'm sure there will be many more races in your future.
Your obsession with this making this race is clouding your judgment of the logistics of the trip. That's typical of teenage behavior, I've raised two.
Good luck either way.

You sound like a smart and responsible person. Still the bottom line is that you are only 17 and still under your parent's care. Follow their advice until you reach the age of majority in your jurisdiction and you can take full liability for any consequences of your actions.

My son started driving back and forth to college at 19, an 8 hour trip. You gotta learn sometime. As far as I'm concerned, if you have demonstrated you're prepared for a long drive, I would have no problem letting you drive yourself.
I survived my teen years as a very reckless driver with no cell phone. It can be done.

Ride a local century and save the entry fee and gas money for a girl (or guy. no judging here) you like. Chocolate malts go a long way...
