What in the heck was he talkin' about?

So I'm putting my 50 miles in this morning, when I come up on two guys on the greenway. One, a fit looking roadie, and the other a rather heavyset fella, I assumed his friend after hearing them talking. I slow from about 20 MPH to 13 mph and follow behind for a couple of hundred yards, mainly because it's busy with other people coming from the opposite direction. The guys are discussing where they are going next, and so forth, and don't appear to be in a hurry. When the traffic clears, I take off around them and take a right about 50 yards later, leading up a steep hill to cross the pedestrian bridge. I had assumed both fellas were gonna keep going straight, so I was kinda surprised to look in my rearview about halfway up the climb to see the rather fit roadie, by himself, about 2 or 3 bike lengths behind me. We get to the top and I pull off to the side to check out the view (oftentimes I stop to take pics, as I shoot nature photography), when he comes by me and rather sarcastically says "thanks for letting me borrow your tire." I say "no problem" while thinking what the hell did that mean?! So after checking out the sights, I head across the bridge, down the other side and up another hill. At the top, I catch up to the guy who is now turning around and heading back the other way. I say "not quite sure what you meant by that comment." He just gives me a quick look, says nothing, and peddles on.

What in the heck could he have been talking about?!?

He was probably drafting off of you, or using you as a windshield.

I don't think he was being sarcastic. It sounds like he was thanking you for allowing him to draft behind you.

The common expression is "taking a wheel," not tire, but yeah, I assume he meant to politely say thanks for providing the wind breaking, although if he was 2-3 bike lengths back, he wasn't getting much of that.

Out of curiosity, why did you assume those two were going to continue straight-on?

Oh boy, it just occurred to me: You didn't have a spare sew-up strapped under your saddle, did you?! Hahaha!

He was being polite. Often times up a hill like that, it's handy to have someone pace ahead of you. You are new to the sport. Take it as a compliment, and try to think better of people.

I overheard them talking about going on to the nature center, which was straight ahead.

Spare sew-up?

Gotcha.

I always try to give the benefit-of-the-doubt, but his tone WAS rather sarcastic. That, and not knowing what he meant, added to the skepticism.

You were climbing a hill ... right? Maybe you mistook being a bit winded for sarcasm?

Spare sew-up?
A sew-up is also called a tubular tire (i.e. the tube is sewn inside the tire casing), which are not really repairable on the road, so the tradition for users of this type of tire is to carry a spare one lashed to the seat rails.

Perhaps, while you were admiring the view, he nicked and made off with yours!

Maybe so... It's definitely not there!

Maybe the sarcasm was directed at himself, because as you noted him being quite far behind, and going uphill, he wasn't getting the presumed benefit of being "on your wheel" because he couldn't catch you!

It's also entirely possible he was just your average a**munch who thought you should have slowed so he could latch onto your wheel, perhaps even because he thought you were earlier drafting him. Whatever the case, he was almost certainly a d*ck anyway, as most people are, so forget about him.

"Letting me borrow your tire" or "lending me your wheel"? The latter makes so mich more sense.

Wow, a simple question sure turned into an attack on the op. I cleaned up some really rude posts. Being rude is not warranted or necessary.

FRANK CANNON, please leave this thread.

This. And, yes, it's generally called "taking a wheel."

This is why I rarely talk to people anymore. Common phrases and sayings aren't recognized in day to day life anymore. And if you compliment a woman on her dress, you will probably be sited for sexual abuse. The days of common courtesies, please, thank-you and compliments are in the past. But I still try. What a world it would be if compliments were given as freely as we use swearing.
