A hitch and a tray rack is the best. Trunk racks really are terrible, even the ones that everyone claims are great, like the Saris Bones. They can ruin the finish on your car. The bikes tend to sway alot and can bang into each other. I did it that way, and suffered. I wish that I would have gone hitch and tray rack like I ended up with.

Unfortunately there is no magic with a trunk rack.

I picked up a Saris Bones 2 last night, seems like it's the better one of that style. My car doesn't have a hitch mount, will see how it works out this week.

Agree that trunk racks are the last resort, but the Saris Bones 3 bike rack would be among the best choices for 2 bikes, IMO. In general, for 2 bikes, 3 bike racks are best as they allow more room for 2 bikes.

I'll look at the Saris Bones 3. They make a hitch for my car but it's so ugly!

saris bones and thule raceway are the best out there. Check on craigs list, I got my Bones 3 for $60 there. Both are 6 point attachment systems so can handle twist mt roads ok as well.

Bought the bones 2 off craigslist for $25 and it wasn't that great. Put on a hitch mount for $100 and bought the 1UPUSA hitch rack and it is amazing.

Doh! Maybe I should have considered a 3 bike rack , I didn't think a 2 bike rack might not leave enough room for 2 bikes .

Based solely on this, you do NOT want a trunk rack then. My now ex wife and I had a Saris Bones 3 for our 2 bikes. What a pain in the asteroid that was. The rack mounts marred the paint where the rack mounted to the back of the SUV. The feet marred the paint where the rested on the bumper. The finish on my stem was ruined from using a top tube bar adapter since it was a full suspension 19" Specialized Stumperjumper FSR.

After that experience, I had a hitch installed on my Audi A4. Ugly? Yep, but after getting the hitch installed, and getting a decent rack, it was well worth it.
