Sorry, new to the game, and these were all the cycling apps that came up on my iPhone when searching.

What makes Strava the likely number one? What sets them apart from the others?

There's no question Strava is number one. And everything makes it different.

This. Strava is the only one that matters.

    Because KOMs, yo!

I had used MMR since I started riding, two months ago. After seeing most serious riders used Strava I gave it a side by side comparison over the long holiday weekend. By Monday I was convinced and didn't start the MMR for Mondays ride. I found a couple guys I haven't seen since HS and a couple others that I didn't know rode, none were using MMR. As I get better/faster I'm sure I'll get into some group riding and by watching what those guys are riding I'll better know when I'm ready. As far as what the app did, MMR met all my needs but the social aspects of Strava was the selling point for me.

Thank you! Finally, some good insight! Much appreciated.

    Just an initial reaction...
I downloaded it and was wondering if you can change the background in settings. I'd much rather have an all black background with white numbers, than the opposite. With the all white background I'm concerned it will use up power rather quickly.

I use it for data logging while I ride and to keep the record of the rides, I don't use it for visual feedback (phone stays in pocket). I still use a standard bike computer w/cadence ( thanks for the advice @qcpmsame ) for instant data feedback I like to keep up with. I use Strava on my phone as well as listen to music through a single wired earbud. The MMR had a "coaching" option that would come through the earbud at set intervals. I liked that but as of now I only know of the "start" and "stop" audio notifications with the free version of Strava. My phone has an amazing battery life, no worry's that the battery will die before the day is up. I may keep on running both apps since I've already paid for a year of premium service on MMR and like features of both but if I was going to choose one it would be Strava

Strava premium has live segments...both through the app and when connected to select Garmin devices like the 520.

And the 510, 810, and 1000 now. Which means my top ten finish and KOM count is going up!

I never heard of strava either untill reading this post...Not that it matters, my son uses MMR and we see and comment on each others rides.
That and the fact that MMR gives me avg. speed, split speed/time, and total elapsed time. It's all I want.

I've had Strava and it was fine, but I started using Ride with GPS and haven't looked back. I'm a recreational/fitness rider for the most part and Ride with GPS gives me everything I want in an app. My only complaint is that if you lose weight and change it in your profile, it changes all the metrics for your previous rides when you were carrying the extra pounds.

    Strava.
Having a flat tire as part of the total cycling experience is highly overrated. Knowing how to fix one quickly is not.

Does the free version of Strava have an automatic pause and restart feature?
The only thing that frustrates me with MMR is the auto pause feature. It recognizes when I stop but then has to manually be started again. A real pain, that I either forget or don't bother with. I stopped using it shortly after downloading the app. A free app that knows when I start moving again would really be welcome.

I use CycloMeter for Windows phone. It works very well, and includes ability to connect to a heart rate monitor. It will direct upload to Strava, Facebook, MapMyFitness, and SkyDrive. It saves as an easily retrievable GPX on my PC to use with Ride With GPS and other Garmin programs. Easy to use, great interface. It records distance, altitude gain and loss, workout time, total time, average speed, peak speed, and calories. It records splits, and uses the phone's mapping system, so you can navigate in a pinch. It has a stats page, as well as detail, charts, and history.

I see a lot of Strava proponents ...but no reasons given why.
