How do I know if my car supports a bike hitch rack?

I'm just confused. I'm kinda tired of my trunk rack. I hate taking it in and out. Am I supposed to? Cuz a theif could steal if I leave it out right?

But as far as a bike hitch, how do I know of my Corolla supports it? I'm unmechanical. Sorry for the inconvenience. I have a hard time figuring things out.

I think you should take up scrapbooking and get a cat or two.

First you must have a trailer hitch installed on your corolla. Chances are that you don't have one as the corolla is not an optimum towing vehicle. It will be a 1.25" or 2" square tube centered below your rear bumper.

You can search eBay for "corolla hitch" to see if they are available. Installation can be difficult, you might check with your local U-haul to see if they sell and install.

Of course, the cost of the hitch and the rack might be as much as a new bike.

You did not say what year your car is but here is an example of what you need:

https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Hit...eid=2008201558

Your car will easily handle a two bike hitch rack.

If you can change parts on your bike and have basic socket set, you will find installation to be simple. Its only four bolts...

Most 10-year olds could use Google to determine which hitch receptacle rack fits beneath their Corolla, if they had a Corolla. The other option is to use the phone to call the local U-Haul service center, where they can both specify and install a receptacle hitch for any car. So...Google or phone.

Why get a hitch installed when you can just get a rack that sits on your trunk lid.

If you go to the Yakima racks website, they have a tool that will tell which of their racks will fit your car. You just enter the model and year of your car, and it shows you which racks will fit. I am sure that they have a rear hitch rack that will fit your Corolla, but it will probably need to be a 1-1/4" rather than 2" model. We had one on our Honda Accord, which isn't much bigger than a Corolla, and they make one that fits my VW Golf.

If you can get a receiver hitch installed on a corolla, then it will work. The fly that may be in the ointment is that some small cars will not accept a receiver hitch - I think newer Honda Civics don't, for example.
I was looking at a Honda Fit and the salesperson said the base model would not take a receiver hitch, but the next version up would.

Didn't the OP start two identical threads wishing and dreaming for a world without cars?
What exactly is he planning to attach the bike rack to?
Is a Corolla no longer a car?

Look at the specs on any car. See if it is listed as having a towing ability. If so a hitch can be added.

I cannot remember which, but one car I was looking at was available with an 'accessory hitch' - it could have something mounted on the rear of the car, but was not capable of towing.

Yes your car supports it. Go to U-Haul and they'll install it for you.

+1) You go to a welding/ U-Haul franchise and Ask someone that does that job.

get the 2" square , not 1.5..

Which is probably why it's good that you dropped out of the legal profession. Most folks want a lawyer who's capable of "figuring things out". At least somewhat...

I did not know you can put a hitch on most any car. The price isn't bad but then you think oh I need to buy the bike hitch rack too and it starts to add up. On one of the sites above it said I need to drill to install which bothers me drilling into the frame not all do and yours doesn't. For my car too one brace goes straight up and the other angles out. I'm sure thats where the available bolts or holes or frame is to attach it too but it looks awkward.

As for leaving my trunk rack on. I leave it on. I'm not in a high crime area and i have the $50 rack from the sporting goods store. With the trunk closed it's kind of sinched but easy enough to loosen the straps and it would come off with the trunk closed. In my neighborhood people leave their bikes on the roof rack overnight and i've left mine on the back porch once or twice.

I pulled the trigger recently for a receiver hitch for my Mini Cooper. I bought a Saris Freedom 2-bike rack and it changed my life. Colors look brighter, food tastes better. Costed nearly as much as a new bike but money well spent for sure.

Not all receiver hitches need to have holes drilled for them; heck, mine attaches to the tow hook on my ancient Civic, and has worked just fine for 15+ years for handling a 2-bike hitch rack.

I'd get a roof rack before I get a hitch installed from Uhaul unless you can't lift a bike overhead. Over all cost is the same, maybe slightly more going with the hitch.

Also remember that if you are ever rear ended, the bike might not be covered under your part of the insurance since its not "bolted" to the car. The other guy would cover it...maybe.

And the added hitch is mounted to a frame that isn't designed for impact so can bend the car frame pretty bad as well.

Sometimes, there are existing holes, but they must be elongated or moved. I remember lying beneath my 2000 Accord with a rotary grinder throwing a shower of sparks beneath my gas tank. I told my wife that I loved her before I began...
