How to park in a bike lane

A video I made for a local news outlet in Halifax regarding some of the confusion around parking in bike lanes.

Cute. But don't lay your bike derailleur side down.

Here in Boston, we have bike lanes next to (on the left of) car-parking lanes. An important lesson to teach is for drivers to watch out for upcoming cyclists when exiting on the driver's side; I have myself even been remiss, but lucky. On occasions we have to double park outside our condo, to unload, but still be in contact with the vehicle. My wife claims we should double-park not on, but outside the bike lane. She says cyclists have thanked her for the courtesy.

Earlier this year, I double-parked in front of my bike shop on the bike lane to run inside just for a minute, and I got a $100 ticket for parking in the bike lane; I think a simple double-parking fine is $25.

I have read that in some european countries you fail the driving test if you use your door-side hand to open the driver's door. Reaching across with your other hand automatically turns your body so you're likely to see an approaching cyclist in your door zone before you open it.
