N-1, putting away an old friend
My old Marin Nail Trail is done. It's been my winter bike for the last 5 years and was my only bike for the 5 years prior. I took it out for a 20 mile ride yesterday and notice the BB was feeling very soft (extremely soft). I thought the BB was loose. But took a closer look today and found a massive crack in the frame around the BB and down tube.
Edit - I submitted too early, sorry
edit.2 - fixed "too" thanks @Doctor Morbius

My condolences. When is the wake?
I lost a 2004 Sequoia Elite that way this spring. Had some good rides on that bike.

The cracked frame photo isn't showing up - there must be clever forum filters to protect my delicate sensibilities

Are you the original owner? if so, you may have a lifetime warranty on the frame https://www.marinbikes.com/us/legal/...mited-warranty

That's tough. And though it might be insensitive to point this out, it WAS an aluminum frame. Sorta like pointing out a death from lung cancer might be due to smoking for 40 years. I've suffered both kinds of losses.

This Marin has seen 4 winters of daily commuting, including temps down to -15F. So it's not lived an easy life. The Marin got a break when the Surly Pugsley was found under the Christmas Tree last year. But the damage had already been done.
I'm not likely going to replace the Marin... I *might* be able to get a warranty replacement. Or I might reclaim my old steel Rockhopper (1989) that my brother-out-law has been using for the last 5 years. But with all that said, the Pugsley is a great winter bike, and should cover my needs.

A little superglue, and you're good to go.
I did accidentally buy a steel Marin frame a while ago. It could be made available. It looks like mine takes Cantis (or V-Brakes), but you could go with the V-Brakes on the rear and Discs on the front.
A couple of rust spots, and undoubtedly older than what you have.
Anyway, let me know if you are interested in the frame to rebuild your battered steed.

NOTHING lasts for ever. It sounds as though you and your "friend" were close. Long rides and sunsets with the wind in your hair... JK
If you hadn't broken it, how else would you have known it was time to give the Pugsley your full attention?
