Again ...

Overview - Products - nuvincicyling.com

never mind counting how many they're all part of the continuously variable ratio design.

If you don't care, why did you bother correcting bandera?

For the record, I had a fixed gear trike as a little kid, a single-speed bike as a grade-schooler, and various multi-speed bikes since then, including 2, 3, 5, 10, 12, 14, 18, 21, 28, and 63.

How many gears ? Is sort of like the which saddle is better discussion. Everyone has a preference, that preference isn't for everyone. About a decade ago, kept track of the gear inch combinations I used most; they were 36, 48 and 64. Sure, a number of times I used a lower gear and fewer times a higher gear. Those three ratios are almost identical to the steps provided by a three speed IGH. Wonder how they knew that a hundred years before I figured it out ?

If you don't understand that I was responding the "distinction" between types of drivetrain. This after the semi-aggressive post of bandera, and followup posts continued that vein. Plus it was a debate, and I still don't care about those "distinctions".

I highly doubt you are concerned with the fine points of literature, music history, general relativity, gps positioning systems, or nuclear physics. Just the end result. In this case, the end result is one "gear" for everything, and that was hell.

Congratulations of bringing this back up again after several days.

I took apart a number of cassettes and used the cogs to build a 9-speed straight-block 11-19 cassette. The front triple crankset has 48-38-28 teeth. High gear is 117.8 gear inches and the ow gear is 39.8 gear inches. I've taken it for 40 kilometers rides on everything from smooth as galass asphalt to potholed graveley dirt roads.

Seems that i could get the EXACT gear I wanted Whenever I wanted it. This bike has 26" x 2.0" knobby MTB tires on it.

I'm very tempted now to put such a setup on one of my road bicycles.

...snip...
I have a Campagnolo Athena triple, 53-39-30, with 11-speed 12-25. It's a straight block 12-19, then 21,23,25. The 30-25 low gear is very close to a typical compact low of 34-28. I can't really recommend the Athena triple, though. It's fussy to set up, and the cranks are limited to 30 on the smallest chainring.

The 39 middle chainring has a really nice range. And the 17,18,19 with the 53 chainring is great right around 20 mph.

I can swap in a 12-29 if the ride will be steep. It loses the 18 cog to gain the 29 cog. I can comfortably sit on 10% grades with the 30-29 low, and usually can sit on about 12% grades. I'd like an even lower combination for long steep climbs.
